Elastic Days is Mascis at his most playful and fun, further adding to one of the most accomplished back catalogues in the history of indie rock.

Even at 52, this Dinosaur senior is a miracle of ongoing evolution. [Dec 2018, p.88]

The last couple of Dinosaur Jr. records in particular have been praised from all angles for their consistency, but J Mascis is continuing to fire out hidden gems under his own name, too.

On Elastic Days, he’s somehow as accessible but elusive as ever.

If you’re a Dinosaur Jr fan and you can live without a couple of Lou Barlow tracks per album then it would be well worth checking out Elastic Days and hearing J do what he does best in a slightly different setting.

Like Zuma, Elastic Days takes a little time to warm up to, but once it’s sunk in, it’s as comfortable as an old pair of jeans.

He can take his more laid-back approach too far, however, sounding as if he might be about to nod off during Web So Dense, Yet the moments of genuine loveliness more than compensate for the occasional bouts of narcolepsy. [Dec 2018, p.111]

The mastermind of indie rock stars Dinosaur Jr. is back with a new solo album. If Mascis’ voice is an acquired taste (and it may well be), myThe mastermind of indie rock stars Dinosaur Jr. is back with a new solo album. If Mascis’ voice is an acquired taste (and it may well be), my taste buds have been enamored by his uniquely cracked, emotive vocal style. This is an album that emphasizes that voice and his ability as a songwriter. There are no real “rock” songs here, just some gorgeously stirring melodies that let his musicianship shine through. But hey, don’t worry, nearly every song has a Mascis-magic lead guitar break. Every time he rips out an electric riff, you’ll bask in that singularly familiar sound of soaring brilliance. Still, it really is his voice and the more subtle acoustic/soft electric guitar work that shine here—and that’s okay with me. Includes contributions from members of Pedro The Lion, The Black Heart Procession, Three Mile Pilot, Miracle Legion, more. Whether you approach “Elastic Days” as a Dinosaur Jr. fan or just someone who is into the indie singer/songwriter genre, you won’t be disappointed. It’s a beautiful, moving, emotionally satisfying listening experience with more than a touch of hypnotic magic. Recommended. Expand
