  1. Though not nearly as strong as 2008’s Ganging Up On the Sun, Evermotion is stronger than 2010’s Easy Wonderful and will continue to keep the band relevant in 2015 and beyond.

Guster took a chance this time out, and it paid off. Where it would have been easy to coast on the effortless charms of Easy Wonderful and Ganging Up on the Sun, they instead chose the more interesting route, resulting in an album that makes for a promising start to their next phase.

Evermotion is an airy, winsome release that puts less focus on guitars, dabbling instead in horns and electronic and new wave sounds, to terrific, moody effect.

Kudos to the group for deciding to do a little remodeling, but it might behoove them to keep the original floor plans, as the current arrangement feels a little out of character.

What we’re left with is a somewhat novel approach that’s bolstered by improved songwriting, but ruined by a sheer lack of direction--or anything interesting to say.

More washed out with a much fuller sound. It's obvious they spent more time on production value. However, I miss the cheerful acoustic sound of Easy Wonderful. Dont get me wrong, there are some catchy songs. Very catchy ones (simple machine). However, well half of the album just seems like filler. Want to love this, but cant help feeling disappointed. Nothing too negative, but nothing all that memorable either. Guster seems to be attempting complex instrumentation and it is really hurting them in the songwriting department. Some songs, like Simple Machine, are more focused, but the majority of them are fairly forgettable. Expand
