    Nokia finds more success on Everything is Beautiful, which, in comparison [to Everything Sucks], is warm and expansive. Made over a span of two years, including some time in Puerto Rico, it has the optimism and groundedness of being in a place where you can occasionally look up and see a wide sky.

    Everything is Beautiful/Everything Sucks is a fun album that allows Frasqueri to show both sides of her personality. ... The main problem with Everything is Beautiful/Everything Sucks is that it doesn’t contain anything as devastating as ‘G.O.A.T.’, ‘Tomboy’ or ‘Kitana’. The songs never quite hit the same vein of intensity, catchiness and lyrical abstraction. There are moments when it comes close.

    The decision to segregate different moods and styles into these contrasting releases was a risky one, but it pays off in that both records remain interesting for their duration. Princess Nokia is for the most part a great rapper, but can sometimes lapse into an artless earnestness, as this enjoyable but patchy diptych demonstrates.

    It appears unnecessary to say 'Everything is Beautiful' is way brighter and sunnier than 'Everything Sucks' because it is what Princess NokiaIt appears unnecessary to say 'Everything is Beautiful' is way brighter and sunnier than 'Everything Sucks' because it is what Princess Nokia wanted to achieve. In this project we explore different instruments like never before in the artist's work. We can observe this fact by the unexpected presence of Terrace Martin in 'Blessings'. Trumpets and piano have never been used as much as here. We tend to hear some jazzy and soul melodies while Nokia's rapping reaches its proxysm.
    The idea of publishing a double album the same day is brilliant and makes a lot of sens in Princess Nokia's experience of life. When we look at the two 'Everything is' projects, we see common themes addressed like self-acceptance, being accepted by others, finding one's place in today society and rap game, ... The main difference lies in the fact that these subjects are tackled by different means. Nokia manages to analyze beautifully two parts of the same coins. Way more accessible at the risk of being seen as mainstream, this album is just as deep as its alter ego.    … Full Review »
