There are no bounds. ‘Exotico’ let’s go of control, so remarkable things can happen. It’s the closest Temples have been to releasing a masterpiece, and that’s saying something.

Temples' fourth leaps from the speakers tapping veins of electro-psych, hypno-kosmische and soft-focused unreality. [May 2023, p.81]

At times the album succumbs to bloated overload, the occasional instrumental placeholders like “Sultry Air” and “Movements of Time“ are not necessary on an already long-running album while the AOR pop of “Slow Days” feels a bit like running in place with fine, yet dull, overall results. However, the band’s chilling-on-a-space-age-beach attitude also results in some grand successes.

One does have to wonder if the songs would have had more impact if they were a bit less produced and mixed. Ultimately, the fault lies with everyone involved and their combined efforts lead to an album that is nice to have playing while idly doing household chores, but is unlikely inspire too many repeat listens.

The album is at its most interesting when it breaks from this mould [dreamy psych rock], embracing more atmospheric sensibilities. [May 2023, p.36]

The album's second half-hour wilts, but the first is Temples Excelling as never before. [Jun 2023, p.92]

The commitment of the band to explore themselves and push the boundaries of their ideas, places, sounds and self perception, it simply makes you gasp of surprise. There is an incredible and ponderous power on what the band constantly proves they are, on method and style, that it's confusing why they get lost in between unfinished intentions of cliché contemporary music. They deserve their own throne in the hall of indie psychedelic rock of the present and future. Expand
