It's to Kelis' boundless credit that she can make the twee screw of “Floyd” or the passive attack trip-hop of “Runnin” feel warmly human just by doing her best to overpower it--even as the music tries, and nearly succeeds, in overpowering her.

Um desses artistas com certeza seria a cantora Kelis. Mais conhecida pelo sucesso Milkshake de 2003, Kelis tem uma carreira praticamente irrepreensível desde a sua estreia em 1999. Sempre seguindo no caminho mais R&B/soul a cantora também se arriscou e se saiu extremamente bem no eletrônico com o lançamento do sensacional Flesh Tone em 2010. Quatro anos depois, Kelis está de volta a música e ao estilo que sempre carregou com maestria com o lançamento do ótimo Food.
Produzido exclusivamente por Dave Sitek (conceituado produtor conhecido pelo trabalho com a banda Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Food é um excelente trabalho que tem a capacidade de se exceder todas as bases primarias sem grandes arrombos de criatividade. A sonoridade básica do trabalho é o soul, mas nas mãos de Dave as canções ganharam um verniz mais alternativo e menos comercial. Adicionando toques de eletrônico vindos do trabalho anterior de Kelis dão um toque mais apurado para as canções. Apesar da construção da sonoridade ser refinada e de uma inteligência inegável o que chama atenção nas faixas e, na verdade, a excepcional instrumentalização feita. Cuidadosa em todos os detalhes e rica em quantidade e qualidade, os músicos por trás estão de parabéns por um trabalho que pouco se ouve no mundo mainstream e, em alguns casos, no mundo mais alternativo. Kelis é dona de uma voz tão crua com seu tom rouco que não precisa de muito para brilhar. Em Food, além de ouvirmos esse maravilho tom, Kelis contempla quem ouve com performances sensacionais, versáteis e explodindo de personalidade por todos os lados. Mesmo com temas seguros e composições sólidas o álbum é uma lição de como fazer do simples obras impecáveis e poderosas. Food é o tipo de álbum que precisa ser ouvido integralmente para poder desfrutar todas as qualidades, mas tenho que fazer uma observação: no começo da faixa Cobbler é possível ouvir vozes femininas e, depois, da Kelis falando em português. Essas vozes são do grupo brasileiro CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy).
