Free Dimensional lives up to its name by serving up lots of sparkling pop with depth as well as heart and brains.

It's the fact that the album emerges from these lacunae, between mainstream electro-pop and DIY indie, between declaration and uncertainty, between contemporary knowingness and a complete lack of irony, that imparts its own imperfect je ne sais quoi--and, paradoxically, the hooks don't hurt.

White-hot electro-effects romp through New Order–meets–G-funk dance beats while Diamond Rings' seductive baritone harmonizes scandals of unrequited love and ambivalent liaisons

The production is much bigger, and his songwriting more assertive and hook-heavy. Unfortunately, the awkward charm and intimacy of his early efforts are missed.

These songs feel more accessible and much less significant. There are a few tracks here that reanimate that sense of excitement which permeated his previous record but they are few and far between.

If this somehow still manages to be the kind of thing that'll get you out on the dance floor, you still have to survive instrumentals that plod rather than thrill, songs that meander rather than aim, and a slew of lazy sing-speech.

Diamond Rings may at times, sing with less vulnerability and emotions but the tunes are hook-laden and produced with an eighties touch. Lyrically, the album is not as deep as Special Affections and at times, quite comical - one two, love you, three four five love you more... While I was not too sure about his rapping on two songs, it was nonetheless brave attempts. Enjoy this and not get so serious. Expand
