Freeman has emerged from Ween with his mojo intact, and less inclined to platy the joker this time around. [Nov 2014, p.99]

It’s a recovery record that serves as an profound artistic statement of individuality, redemption and freedom.

The resulting 12 tracks find Freeman both revelling in and lost within this musical yin and yang.

He sounds comfortable with his new band, a pristinely recorded quartet that frames his lyrics with music just interesting enough to not overwhelm them.

If anything, Freeman is a tighter record than McCartney--it's not homemade, it's all complete songs--but there's no denying it shares the same spirit; that it is the sound of breaking dawn of a new day.

The songs that fill the LP are gorgeous, subtly offbeat numbers, blending a signature humor with a surreal approach to pop.

For Ween newcomers, FREEMAN is bound to sound odd, even off-putting. I get it. But this is the promise and labor of appreciating a lifelong cult artist like Freeman: taking the time to engage him on his own terms.

It is a more grown up record, for sure, but to my ears that is a good thing. Sure it is not Ween, and bitter fans will be doing themselves a very big disservice by discounting this album. It retains the amazing voice, melodies, and downright excellent songwriting that made me love Ween in the first place. Full Review »
