  1. On ‘Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2’, the producer meshes a wistful grab-bag of influences – nu-disco, funk, boogie, soul – with his skill for creating a mega-watt pop-hit, taking listeners on a journey on a psychedelic trip you won’t want to end.

It’s a fine wind-down album, one that can be put on shuffle at the end of a long-summer-night bacchanal, when revelers reach that point where they’re too tired to do anything but bask in the glow of the blowout they just threw.

Whilst the orange glow of sunsets and Aperol Spritz’ are in full swing, it’s a record made exclusively for these moments.

A hazy collection of groove-driven vocal tracks featuring singers and rappers.

Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 simply demonstrates competence. Harris may say that this album is powered by fuck-you juice; it is as threatening as an Erewhon smoothie.

The sense of a missed opportunity lingers.

The issue is that none of the songs that all this gorgeous production whirls around are actually any good.

Calvin Harris is good at singles and terrible with albums. FWB vol. 2 is better than vol. 1, but still without fireworks. More funky thanCalvin Harris is good at singles and terrible with albums. FWB vol. 2 is better than vol. 1, but still without fireworks. More funky than first and has three really really really good good tracks - "Obsessed", "New To You" and "Somebody Else". Others are completely unremarkable. It's enough only for 6/10. Expand

Sounds like I’m listening to an hour long funk song. Here’s a quick run through. New money is underwhelming and doesn’t fit 21’s style at all.Sounds like I’m listening to an hour long funk song. Here’s a quick run through. New money is underwhelming and doesn’t fit 21’s style at all. Potion is okay, but Young Thug ruins it for me. Woman Of The Year is good, and everyone pulled through. Obsessed is insanely overrated. New To You is alright, but a bit slow. Ready Or Not doesn’t fit well on the album. Stay With Me is great, but why did Calvin get Halsey on his song and she just talks? I don’t even remember Somebody Else or Nothing More To Say. Live My Best Life is the exact reason people should stop putting Snoop Dogg on songs. Lean On Me just drones on and on. Day One is a bad closer in general. The album is just kind of boring, and I wouldn’t really recommend it. Expand

Calvin Harris has become absorbed by the success of his past work, and now has created a body of work that can be seen as a money-grab. WithCalvin Harris has become absorbed by the success of his past work, and now has created a body of work that can be seen as a money-grab. With big featuring artists and big production, the album unravels to be the same song over and over, but with various singers on each song. What makes the album more mediocre and generic is the lack of creativity and originality in its production and songwriting; like it's all been done before, because it has. Expand
