With ‘God Save The Animals’, these genre-resistant idiosyncrasies remain, though a few moments shine through with newfound clarity and vulnerability. Across the diverse and consistently excellent 13-track record, he hops between styles, perspectives and energies with abandon.

Though it feels glued together by the seams, God Save The Animals, like the best Alex G efforts, eventually reveals an almost impossible cohesiveness – a slightly off-kilter haze where a smouldering heart shines for others to lean into.

Alex G is a genius at crafting intimately familiar feelings while injecting off-kilter miscues that satisfy the oddball compulsions living in our heads. The level of restraint routinely becomes unbalanced in an instant, yet the results are more reassuring than anxiety-inducing.

On his latest album, God Save the Animals, he wrings strange beauty from our non-human companions, grappling with innocence and its discontents through their saucer-eyed stares. God Save the Animals stands out for its moments of sharp lyrical simplicity.

For the most part it’s a rich and deftly arranged work, and though there’s a warmth that can sometimes border on cloying, he cuts through with chaos and levity.

An album that, if challenging, successfully mixes religious motifs with a balance of tactile, earthbound textures and hypnotically dreamy, alien atmospheres.

The inventiveness on display is undeniably impressive, but the process sometimes hides a little too much of the artist behind it. [Nov 2022, p.86]

By far one of Alex G's best albums yet; every song is well composed, emotional and rich with atmosphere and texture.

But man, the strange experimentation between folk/almost hyperpop-esc ballads is quite sensational. Fascinating record that has some of Alex's best written/produced songs to date. Highly recommend giving this one a listen. Expand

A zillion voices, zillions of instruments/percussion, and mysterious references/storylines. No way to digest this in one sitting. Everything sounds beautiful, piano, various creaks. Singing is great. Effects are enriching. It must have been a challenge to make this feel cohesive. I’m thinking Brand New mixed with alt-J, recent Bon Iver, and Teen Suicide. Confident, experimental, bonkers. No standout songs…just enjoy wading through the pool. Expand

It's an admirable fleshing out of all the things Alex has done best. The leading "runner"s anxiety or "no bitterness" folky Americana . This record feels like a sweet in-between of the coutry Americana of "rockets" and bizzare folktronica of "house of sugar" . A really good record on par if not better than the rest of his enigmatic catalogue. Expand
