This is an album full of emotional ambushes.

Overmono have produced an album with a euphoric and kaleidoscopic appeal.

For the most part, though, their method bears fruit, yielding an irresistibly catchy pop record that holds true to its humble Welsh roots.

A consistent album rather than a collection of tracks – or worse, a handful of big tunes padded out to album length with filler – Good Lies is filled with moments like that: you can spot the influences, but they’re always passed though a filter, presented in an original way.

Wistful R&B vocal samples and elements of woozy hip-hop became more present in later releases like 2022's Cash Romantic, and Good Lies continues in this sort of melancholic pop-influenced direction, while also including several surefire floor-fillers.

‘Good Lies’ displays the strength of brotherhood, solidifying their position within the scene by cherishing childhood’s sweetness.

‘Good Lies’ puts the pair on the edge of a major breakthrough. Its pop-leaning moments are also its most exciting, and the creativity and skill with which they bridge these worlds is thrilling.

Good Lies toes a fine and, yes, functional, balance. There’s beauty in all this precision too—like an Eames chair, a perfectly weighted spoon, or the cone of a 15-inch subwoofer pushing air out of the bass scoops.

A signature sound is all well and good, but in the future the duo would benefit from indulging their inventive side more.

This is interesting to hear, and it can also get to be entertaining. This might not be for all the ears, but I'm sure that, for the right ones, there is a galaxy here to explore, and I'm excited for it. I'm excited to come back to this in a better state and to follow up with the future of Overmono.
Deep, heavy, and yet, natural and welcoming, "Good Lies" is something that will grow stronger in the culture of deep techno-trance.

Good Lies feels like Overmono concluding on the evolution of their previous EPs. The tracks here are both a continuation of what makesGood Lies feels like Overmono concluding on the evolution of their previous EPs. The tracks here are both a continuation of what makes Overmono so distinct; the sample-heavy, moody electro cuts that pay homage to previous electronic pioneers such as Burial, and their first true lean into more catchy and pop-inspired techno-dancehall fusions. So U Kno continues the legacy of tracks like Gunk, with a relentless bassline that drives through distorted vocals. The pre-release tracks from this record including Is U and Calling Out feel like highlights, but new cuts such as Vermonly complete the mood of the album as a whole, creating an atmospheric, engaging album that demands replaying to catch every hidden element of each track. Overall, an very impressive debut which leaves room for Overmono to take their sound in new directions in the future. Full Review »
