The Monkees have made an album which stands readily among the best of their career and of the year so far.

Being a summer release, the sun really shines down on tunes like “Good Times,” with it’s go-go beat, “She Makes Me Laugh,” “Our Own World,” “Gotta Give It Time,’ and come on get happy with “You Bring the Summer.”

No one ever asked The Monkees to be anything more than pratfalling archetypes who could act and sing a bit, yet they asked more of themselves than they needed to; and they’re digging deep again today.

Featuring a previously recorded vocal by Davy Jones, who died in 2012, it’s a match for any of their ’60s hit 45s. It also features all four Monkees, the only song of the 13 here to do so. The remainder, penned by the group, musician fans and long time cohorts, feature Tork, Dolenz and Nesmith and for the most part recapture the enchantment of the original group.

Mr. Dolenz sings as if there’s no reason to take anything too seriously. Fifty years later, the Monkees are still endearing.

This is a satisfying mix of revised and completed '60s recordings by original Monkees songsmiths like Boyce & Hart and Neil Diamond, with new songs by the likes of Andy Partridge, Rivers Cuomo and Adam Schlesinger. [Jul 2016, p.78]

Micky looks at the past not with sad reverence but with a smile, happy that he was there and happy to be able to sing about it still, and that's the vibe of Good Times!: it was a blast to live it then and it's a blast to relive those times too.

All told, probably The Monkees’ best album, after their hits compilation.

It nails the classic summer-jangle Monkees sound, with seriously fantastic new tunes from Rivers Cuomo, Andy Partridge and the none-more-mod squad of Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller.

Good Times! is better than it needed to be. Unlike the tossed off albums by most legacy acts, there’s real heart and energy to this, not to mention some rather great tunes. But what it likely won’t do is connect The Monkees with a modern audience.

I hope the Monkees go on recording as long as they can, even if it is not the same without Davy among them for real. Full Review »

It is a fresh view of 1967 that refuses to be pigeonholed into a convenient genre. It is the best of the early Monkees vibe with a healthy dose of modern songwriting that stays true to the Monkees mission statement. My 19 year old daughter relates to it as much as her 51 year old father. This may be their best stuff since Pisces and it may be more than that. Full Review »
