With its mix of catchy and moving songs, an artful structure, and a way with words, Grim Town delivers a piece of Zeitgeist as well as a solid set of tunes.

The pace drifts towards the second half, where the five-minute-long “Missed Calls” drags. But there’s no doubt this stop on Soak’s journey is one worth spending time at.

There’s no doubt this is an album that benefits from employing a tried-and-tested formula--not least because it carries with it the precious and generally life-affirming ability to excavate pleasure from pain.

Grim Town makes growing up seem--well, grim--but Monds-Watson skillfully captures its bitter realities as well as the stirring memories that become life fuel.

SOAK’s honesty, combined with her considerable musical gifts, ensures that Grim Town is always a nice place to visit, even if you’d never want to live there.

She’s now surpassed [her debut release] on its follow up Grim Town, which continues the themes of her debut, but with a new emotional growth.

Overall, and perhaps importantly, it mostly sounds like something to sing along to, rather than the soundtrack to your next existential crisis.

While I was somewhat impressed by SOAK's debut, her talent has caught me by the scruff of the neck with this follow up, "Grim Town". VeryWhile I was somewhat impressed by SOAK's debut, her talent has caught me by the scruff of the neck with this follow up, "Grim Town". Very different to the debut in that we have a much fuller sound and the majority of the material is much more up tempo. I personally find "Grim Town" better thought out, more developed and much more enjoyable. Two thirds of this album is indie pop pulled off incredibly well. It is the slower paced songs that remind you of the debut and it is these songs that take from "Grim Town". It has about 3 tracks too many for my liking but for sure the majority of it kept me thoroughly engaged. There can be no doubting SOAK's songwriting ability after hearing this. I'm looking forward to what comes next and hope that it won't be another 4 years in the making. Expand
