"Tell Me It's Over" sways with echoes of a '50s slow dance, "Crush" is so light it floats into the stratosphere, and "Bigger Wow" swells with strings reminiscent of vintage Vanessa Carlton. Such moments provide a needed contrast to the motivational ones while also connecting to Lavigne's bubblegum roots, a move that makes the overall maturation of the album feel earned.

Overall, Head Above Water is a collection of eclectic tracks and done well this could make for an element of surprise that keeps your ears perked in anticipation. Here, however, it makes for sonic inconsistencies that leaves you dissatisfied, wanting the bigger and better things that Avril is definitely capable of.

Lavigne might not have found a musical identity that truly becomes her, but Head Above Water is an effective, and occasionally affecting, album.

The Lavigne heard at the beginning of the record is almost an entirely different person by the end; the hard part is figuring out which part you like more.

These slightly above average hooks/melodies deserve better. I deserve better. So tell me it’s over.

The problem with the album’s dabblings in chart pop à la Taylor Swift (Souvenir, Goddess, Bigger Wow) and post-Amy Winehouse retro-soul (Tell Me It’s Over) isn’t that the songs are poor, or that Lavigne can’t manage the stylistic shifts. It’s more that she doesn’t impose herself on them--they could be by anyone.

She’s become her own worst nightmare – boring.

Her best album. She put her heart in every single song and you can feel when you’re listening to it. Her masterpiece.

Not surprised this album received the ratings it did from its critics. Not a single song from this album appealed enough to me to download or get into. Things like how she pronounced "bananas" in Goddess just solidified how much of a joke this all seems to be. On top of that, the album was delayed for many years. My frustration is so long and deep that I don't even know in which order to sum it all up. I'll always have a special place for her in my heart because she was practically my entire childhood and young adulthood, but mainly because of how her lyrics haven't grown at all, I'll have to leave my stan card here. I'll give her next album a listen, but until then my feelings will stay this way. Expand
