The instrumentals are perhaps the most interesting; as unfinished tracks, you’re left to imagine the words Smith might have added to his work.

Appealing on any level, this digs deeper than the studio albums to glimpse Smith's raw brilliance shining. [Mar 2016, p.99]

Heaven Adores You accomplishes its purpose: It reminds us of the evolution of a favorite artist and gives us the gift of new music, even if what it does best is send us back to the original albums to say yes to them all over again. [No. 129, p.51]
  4. Feb 3, 2016
Smith helps us search for our own emotions, our sadness, and level with it. The unreleased material on Heaven Adores You gives us one more bag of songs to hold close, asking him to save us the same way he asked that of us.
  5. Feb 10, 2016
There is much more to Heaven Adores You than endearing scraps, however, and none of them are more important than the version of "True Love" that appears here.
  6. Feb 3, 2016
If the individual components occasionally drift or sit still, the overall construction of the soundtrack has momentum, warmly wandering from a 14-year-old tentatively plucking away on his acoustic guitar to a singer/songwriter who never quite seems as confident in his art as perhaps he should.
  7. Feb 5, 2016
New Moon, Heaven Adores You is a much welcome addition to the Smith oeuvre.
