Brighter compositions match the lyrical demands of more specified storytelling, most vividly on piano-led "Mr. Lee."

On Heavy Lifter they continue to find catharsis while moving in reverse as the bronzed halos of nostalgia meld with the intimacy of their blazed slow-core.

Hovvdy's balanced expressions between residual nostalgia and murmuring secrecy are worn in beautifully on Heavy Lifter.
  4. Oct 18, 2019

What distinguishes this record from any number of other nostalgic indie-pop ruminations on suburban teenhood is the sparkling optimism Hovvdy carry with them.
  5. Oct 17, 2019
    70
The result is a more coherent set of tunes that don't veer far from Hovvdy's established ruminative demeanor.

On Heavy Lifter, Martin and Taylor continue to lean on each others’ strengths while also allowing room for pushing out prior boundaries. By expanding the sandbox, Hovvdy open up possibilities that promise more good things to come. If you’ve missed the duo’s prior releases, Heavy Lifter is a good place as any to get on board.

By expanding their musical palette, Martin and Taylor leave less room for themselves, resulting in songs that are competent but nondescript.
