The album is a call to the kind of funk that closes over your head like too much champagne. Undulating, fizzy, and almost light-headed, this is music to induce a euphoria that lifts skirts and spirits.

Where all this fits in the mesh of the Prince pantheon is anyone's guess, but it's in the good part, and after nearly 40 albums that's an achievement.

A proudly organic companion to the EDM-inflected "Phase One," Prince's latest album shows that he hasn't lost his interest in (or his knack for) the creeping funk and lush R&B balladry he was making in the early 1990s.

Like its companion album, it’s wildly inconsistent but when Prince hits form, it’s difficult to argue with the man’s genius.

And so, yet again, Prince remains an artist in sore need of an outside editor. Still, if your attention span as a Prince fan has been sorely tested, HITnRUN Phase Two is a good point to reconnect with him. [Mar 2016, p.113]

While patchy, the good news is that Phase Two is much better than its predecessor.

Even in the midst of the fairly wretched Phase Two there are gems but you sure have to dig for them. [Feb 2016, p.54]

Unlike its predecessor, this is a very pleasant suprise. An album full of lush sounds, great melodies. On constant repeat since I got it. He even goes so far as to conclude his album with the song "June" that explores his thoughts about life and death, regrets and deep thoughts. For those still not willing to accept that he killed himself, his last words on the album are THATS IT ! followed by one second of album silence for each album he released in his career. Expand

"Hitnrun: Phase Two" is the album Phase One should have been if it was, you know, good. Phase Two doesn't try to copy a trend, and instead finds its own identity. Phase Two is an incredibly jazzy alum that covers a multitude of topics and presents some of Prince's best and most underrated work.

This album hits the ground running with "Baltimore; a great commentary on the current political state of the United States, with some fantastic background vocals and guitar riffs. "RocknRoll Love Affair" tells a cute little story about boy meets girl, with horns to boot. "Xtraloveable" is another hit with more of the jazzy instrumentation that I love.

Some of the songs near the end are a bit forgettable or in the case of "When She Comes" stays falsetto for far too long. With that being said, this is a vast departure from Phase One and for the better.
