III is a cinematic album undertaking a complicated subject. III and the accompanying music video are culturally important points of contact with the realities of addiction. As such, the Lumineers deliver the album with compassion and clemency.

It's cleverly and passionately done. [Nov 2019, p.112]

Most of the songs maintain a decidedly hollow-eyed sound, one that requires the listener to lean in and patiently wait for the songs to reach a crescendo. Happily, it’s well worth the indulgence.

III moves at a deliberate, nearly dreary pace that forces a listener to pay attention, and while it can take some effort to meet the Lumineers on their own terms, it's nevertheless easy to admire the ambition behind the project.

Something of a grind--repeat helpings of grimly strummed acoustic guitar and keening vocals becoming the folk equivalent of consecutive courses of muesli. [Nov 2019, p.29]

sinceramente esse álbum está no meu top2 de 2019. "Glória", "Life in the City", "April" e "It Wasn't Easy to bem Happy for YouTube" são as minhas favoritas! obrigado The Lumineers por esse álbum incrível

Music tells the story of family struggling to come to grips with where they and why they are there and it makes you feel something rather than simply bobbing your head to songs without meaning. Well done. Expand

It’s a cinematic piece, made to be listened to sequentially and with the visual accompaniment. With an attention paid to it and the lyrics. The anthems and tonal blunderbuss that came with the previous albums, each of which carried listeners along with the depth of the emotions, high or low, therein isn’t quite as present in this album, or at least not quite as easily accessed without watching the development and tension of the story through the visuals and plot. It’s a turbid story that tells a meaningful and expressive story of addiction and relationships that is novel, investing and vulnerable. It’s an experience piece for a life’s story that many people don’t get to touch themselves in their lifetimes without incurring personal damage. This raw honesty is beautiful, inviting, and articulate. The accompaniment musically in III is as much a personal expression and invitation for shared experience as the previous album releases were emotional backdrops for brooding and exaltant listening.

Altogether, a worthwhile listen that tells a story that the artists wished to share with their audience, and while it may not be what most listeners were expecting or necessarily hoping for, it is a growth experience best done alongside the music videos that produces a few potential playlist plucks as well.

A faltering, unfaithful replication of indie folk, drowning in a false sense of "meaningful" schmaltz.
