Nov 18, 2021Though it's just over 20 minutes long, In Virus Times has plenty of the experimental openness and welcoming warmth of Ranaldo's other solo work for Mute, and artfully approximates the feeling of a live improvisation during a time when concerts were difficult at best.

Nov 18, 2021The fourth and final part of the EP is by far the darkest, with no respite or resolution. The chords loom uneasily throughout, because that’s how Ranaldo must have felt at the time. In moments like these, In Virus Times is best understood as a snapshot of a miserable year, and one person trying to work through it.

Nov 18, 2021No, In Virus Times is not a fun album. Some of you may barely find it listenable. In this case, context is everything, and you don’t need to be neighbors with Mr. Ranaldo to understand what that context was. We all felt it and we’re all feeling the ripple effects of it still.

Nov 18, 2021In Virus Times isn’t going to be anyone’s release of the year, but it’s unfair to judge it by that criterion. The recording is a time capsule, cathartic for its creator and a candid audio tour through the living room of one of alternative music’s best ever guitarists. He just doesn’t sound like it here.
