Though it spans just 16 minutes between three songs, Jamaica Plain is a must-hear for Violators fans interested in a musical snapshot of the band’s early stages.

The web of sounds here creates the same relaxing and breathable environments as Eno's most meditative work, just a far more lo-fi rendering of it.
  3. 70
It is refreshing to meander through the songs without any clear lines to cling onto or boxes to fit it in.
  4. Nov 25, 2013

Though certainly not as compelling as Vile's more recent work, the Jamaica Plain EP is worth a listen if only to dig deeper into the musical past of one of modern indie-rock's most celebrated performers.

Vile has mostly left his interest in extreme tape manipulation and soggy lo-fi charm behind him, but the Jamaica Plain EP offers a brief and fitfully pretty glance backwards.

Jamaica Plain feels fittingly tentative and exploratory. [No. 105, p.58]
  7. 40
    Jamaica Plain is inessential stuff.
