Contemplative and unstable, the record is a 12-track paean to the benevolent act of taking domestic solace in retreating. ... William Basinski is back within his element, and we should take all comfort in that.
  2. Uncut
    Nov 12, 2020
Lamentations furthers Basinski's reputation as an empathetic conduit of tragedy, mirroring societal tribulation as a necessary act of communal release. [Dec 2020, p.27]
  3. Nov 12, 2020
Basinski approaches the varying chapters of Lamentations with an openness and fluidity that gels together even his most dissimilar ideas. Lamentations wanders cautiously between dark and hovering gloom, tender reflection, and moments of wistful nostalgia that almost feel gleeful. It's one of the more accessible of Basinski's offerings, and continues building on the delicate language of subtext and observation that makes his work so important.
  4. The Wire
    Nov 12, 2020
Lamentations is a gently devastating and cathartic listening experience. [Nov 20, p.54]
  5. Nov 16, 2020
Lamentations keeps you on your toes for its expansive, one hour time span. Even after multiple listens, the layers keep unfolding. William Basinski delivered one of his finest records by choosing to fragment his creative flow and explore dark ambient territories.
  6. Nov 24, 2020
The results are beautiful, an upside to all this desolation, a lengthy excursion among the snippets. Perhaps there could have been a couple more of these at the expense of some of the shorter, less obviously complete pieces, but as a fascinating clear-up exercise, Lamentations makes a virtue of its small sorrows.
  7. Nov 12, 2020
Paradise may forever be lost, but this elegant elegy is worth many returns.

Along with Sparkle Division, Lamentations feels like yet another masterpiece from Basinski this year. What a treasure this man is.
