Aguilera lets her talent fly as high as her freak flag, solving pop’s current obsession with box-ticking by nudging their lines into shapes more her liking.

Her eighth album is a healthy mix of hit-chasing, theatrics and soon-to-be classic power ballads that emphasize her immense skills over half-baked conceptual themes.

It’s a well-calculated offering from a living legend whose abilities are still very much intact.

Even at its busiest, though, the music emphasizes Aguilera’s powerful voice, which more than anything is what separates her from the younger stars whose popularity has eclipsed hers in recent years. She runs through the full gamut of moods, from flirty to depressed to joyful to furious--each a response, or so we’ve been trained to think, to some real-life situation.

These ["Maria," "Sick of Sittin’" and "Fall in Line"] are sturdy moments on an album that feels less like an end in itself than a promising first step toward a genuine pop rebirth—moments that are strong enough to inspire hope for Aguilera’s own The Velvet Rope or, at least, My Love Is Your Love. She has certainly still got the range.

Every track is polished and purposeful, but the sheer busy quality of her singing and overactive variety of the production ensures that Liberation never settles into a coherent listening experience.

Liberation never reaches the heights fans likely wanted from Xtina, it serves as a pleasant refresher for a voice that has earned its place in the annals of pop history. That said, it’s a bit sad to feel like her finest moments are, at least for now, also in her past.

Xtina made sure that what she brought to our plate is something unconventional. This masterpiece cannot be beaten by other artists. SheXtina made sure that what she brought to our plate is something unconventional. This masterpiece cannot be beaten by other artists. She brought us to her world. The Intro was enchanting and the arranagement of the songs were put on a shelf correctly. The ending showed us how vulnerable Xtina is when talking about love. Indeed, it's worth waiting for. Chrissy for the win. Expand

The production all throughout the album is of great qualityWith 'Liberation', Christina Aguilera delivers a truly cohesive & fantastic album! The production all throughout the album is of great quality that really helps to bring the songs to life. The lyrics are everything from fun and energetic to vulnerable & deeply personal. Perhaps the greatest quality of this album, to me at least, is that it is very versatile and includes many different sounds and vibes while still managing to have unity & cohesiveness as a whole musical body of work! In Liberation, the listener can find a song for almost any occasion and any mood they might be in and the music will fit in greatly. It's also never really a Christina Aguilera album if it doesn't include those powerhouse vocals that the singer-songwriter is known for! This album is certainly no exception, as it contains some of her best vocal performances in years! Liberation is overall some of Aguilera's best work since Back To Basics in 2006. While it may not necessarily be her best album ever, Liberation is a worthy and quality addition to the excellent discography that Aguilera has given us over the years! Overall, this album is a solid and impressive body of work and I would recommend it to all Aguilera fans and any fan of music!
