    It has the feel of a transitional record; having proved to himself that it’s possible to pair up heartfelt songs with sometimes incongruous music, perhaps Lekman will hone this concept further in his future work.

Certainly the departure of Lisa as his avowed best friend has shaken him to the core and knocked him out of a funk that had started to become pronounced in his most previous outing I Know What Love Isn't. The sound of this song cycle is most compelling: not only polished but beautiful, with Madelene Birgenius's adept piano playing a stunning addition. Some of my favorite songs include How We Met, The Long Version, an astute and concise statement of what the theory of evolution entails, preceding the stanza offering an account of how he did, in fact, meet the girl alluded to; and Postcard #17, about his general fear of what's to come, with the amazing stanza, part of which I quote here for your erudition and pleasure: If you say it's name/three time in front of the mirror/It's pale face will appear/grinning in the corner/And you turn around/and you study its particulars/You say is that what I was scared of?/F***ing ridiculous.… Full Review »
