While Long Enough to Leave may lack some of the punch and energy of previous releases, it shows The Mantles developing their own sound and the record grows more and more powerful with each play.

The extra thematic layer gives the music a depth that bodes well for this band’s future.

The album, by and large, plays like a live recording; somewhat endearingly sloppy performances add to the authenticity of a band whose honest songwriting is more important than any flash-in-the-pan posturing.

Even if they’re slow in the uptake, and a cursory listen will only reinforce them as makeshift compositions, the tuneful nature of the album begins to flourish with repeated spins.

Equal parts Nuggets era-psych as it is The Cure and The Smiths, it is certainly an interesting avenue of songwriting they’ve chosen to explore. As with most exploration, however, there are missteps and wrong directions.

Long Enough To Leave might not blaze much of a unique trail, wearing its love of the past proudly on its sleeve. That said, it still delivers its share of gems culled from other well-traveled musical paths.

The Mantles' sound is similar to the common sound of early twee pop jangle pop acts from the late 80's laced upon a gritty indie-pop foundation.

Twee-pop seems to be at the peak of its comeback as many jangle-pop bands are entering the scene. The Mantles ability to modernize a classic sound makes them stand out from the other bands. Good album.
