My beautiful, beautiful, Anberlin. Where to begin? Well first I'll say this album is more of an 8.7-9 but I need to help balance out the ratings on here. That said, this is easily their second best, only beat by Cities, which is an INCREDIBLE album. Lowborn, revisits some of Anberlins old sounds and also brings some new shades of Anberlin. Now, one of the reasons this isn't a perfect 10 is the closer. Anberlin have been known for their closers on their albums, but the closer on this album, "Harbinger," while great is not on the level of "*Fin" for instance. This is weird to me especially as this is their very last record they'll be making, unless they surprise us in the future. But other than that tiny flaw, the songs are great and have quite some diversity. I think my favorite is "Velvet Covered Brick." Not only is that the best on the album, but it very well may be my favorite that Anberlin has ever made. Do yourself a favor and check this out. If you're new to Anberlin, check Cities first, then come to this one. Expand

After years of playing great music Anberlin has finally decided that it is time to move on. Although not as popular as their album dubbed Cities; Lowborn is a strong final record. I thoroughly enjoyed Lowborn, especially Atonement which contains a lot of emotion.

As it stands, Lowborn isn't as good as Vital, but it still does an admirable job at continuing Anberlin's sonic expression. [Jul 2014, p.95]
  2. Lowborn is a fairly strong record on a song-for-song basis, and the added emotional heft of it being a swansong helps to elevate it above the weaker entries in the band’s catalog--even despite its numerous issues.

If there is a heaviness--an emotional weight that seems to be bearing down upon Christian and Anberlin throughout Lowborn--chalk it up to a band nearing the end of an almost 15-year career. However, despite this heaviness, Anberlin have crafted an album of deeply emotive and, one imagines for longtime fans, cathartic songs.
