This track [“The Lethal Chamber”], as well as Luminiferous as a whole, aggressively illustrates that High On Fire still deserves its place at the top of underground metal’s food chain.

Heavy metal at its finest, Luminiferous is a brilliant, dynamic release, showcasing High on Fire's penchant for diverse, thoughtful songwriting and impeccable musicianship.

The band's post-thrash attack still levels steel, but minor tweaks--snakefinger solos ("Slave the Hive"), waltz tempos ("The Sunless Years"), thrash dynamics ("Luminiferous"), and psychedelic haze ("The Cave")--bolt a crushing new frame on a classic chassis.

One reason that High on Fire don't get accused of resting on their laurels is that they always come out hungry, anxious to refine their sound and remove anything that is not absolutely essential to their purposes. Luminiferous accomplishes that as well.

Luminiferous feels more like a collection of tightly crafted songs, spanning the stoner metal spectrum from atmospheric doom to fast-paced Motörhead-inspired punk metal.

Luminiferous burns hard, but it’s searching for an attitude adjustment that could make the flames grow higher.

[The album] chugs and punches in a suitably heavy way without ever feeling essential.
