It's not just a follow-up to their first mildly disappointing venture, it's a bracing reminder of just how thrilling King Gizzard can be at their peak.

This is an impressive and well-rounded collection of work from the hard-working Australians.

With their feet up on the couch and laurels well and truly rested upon, they’ve gifted us with L.W. which (excepting its sister record) is undoubtedly the most comfortable LP the group has released in quite some time.

A little more forward in the use of bouncing rhythms. [Mar 2021, p.28]

L.W shows the band continuing to enjoy the sounds of stringed instruments and drum kits that are tuned to microtones. Guitars have extra frets so that the band can hit “non-traditional” notes; the drums are pitched slightly off-key but are still hit in such a syncopated way so as to keep the listener’s foot tapping. The result is another collection of slightly wonky, very head-noddy songs.

L.W. may not boast many surprises, but it cements its makers as masters of their realm.

Bigger, broader but at the same time even more catchy and polished than its older sibling released last year (just listen to last trackBigger, broader but at the same time even more catchy and polished than its older sibling released last year (just listen to last track K.G.L.W.). The Microtonal core is there and we can hear it in new ways and forms. Listen to both albums K.G. and L.W. to access the point, where currently is just one facet of creative space of this band, heavily influence by Eastern sonic properties. Expand

LW and KG are both great starting points for this band. They switch up their styles so often, it may be hard to describe their "sound", butLW and KG are both great starting points for this band. They switch up their styles so often, it may be hard to describe their "sound", but these records seem to bring everything they do together. It is psychedelic prog rock for NOW people, I suppose. I can't say if LW is better or worse than KG. My only critique is that I wish they just released both records as a double album since they fit together so well. I love it! Expand
