This is brave, baffling, bonkers and most importantly, absolutely brilliant. Strap yourselves in, it’s a hell of a ride.

    They're strutting along a tightrope without a downward glance here. [27 Jan 2018, p.50]

The musical landscape has changed since Fall Out Boy’s Warped Tour days in the mid-’00s, and so have they. As Mania shows, it’s probably for the best.

Any mania in MANIA is limited to the lyrics, while the band’s music is even-tempered and hardly given to extremes.

Since around 2007’s Infinity On High, the key to enjoying Fall Out Boy has been letting go of their pop-punk past and embracing the pop band that always hid in plain sight. That was a chore on American Beauty/American Psycho, but less so on Mania. As endorsements go, that’s pretty qualified.

All this feverish digital desperation makes the already clamorous M A N I A feel positively cacophonic: it may only be 39 minutes but it's one long ride.

M A N I A won’t suddenly ignite a revisionist outlook of Fall Out Boy’s career, but it does leave you pining for the earnest giddiness of their pre-hiatus material. This is a feeble gesture of benign, stadium-sized pop that’s been cynically constructed, artificially beefed-up and saturated beyond the point of listenability.

They could have done a little better in a couple of songs, maybe, but the album shows perfectly the meaning of "mania". Expand

One of the most "sharp-edged" and experimental album by them.
Their electric influences were good overall. Starting from the energetic opener "Stay Frosty Royal Milk Tea", there follows soulful piano rock "The Last Of The Real Ones" and synth-rock love song "Wilson(Expensive Mistakes)". And in the later half of the album, you can see the diversity of music, such as R&B-ish slow song "Heaven's Gate" and experimental African rock "Sunshine Riptide ft. Burna Boy". Even though it wasn't comfortable that they began to use hip-hop beats, boring pop influences.
I felt that their evolution is going on the wrong way first, but it has sharper and better sound than the ordinary pop album "American Beauty/American Psycho".

I think it was an enjoyable album, but coming after 2 really great ones, it's just feels bad.

There's just no heart into anything. The production is great, everything sounds tight, just no substance and forgettable songs. If someone said this was an album of rejected songs from their last one, I'd believe it.

It's still strong though, Young and Menace is unique and feels fun, Champion and Wilson are pretty solid, and Sunshine Riptide is very different in a good way. If you're a fan of the band you won't be disappointed, if you've never heard them before, I strongly suggest you start with any other album.
