Such a wonderful experience. From the incredibly pop (B.Y.O.B. and Old School Hollywood Baseball) to the more conventional S.O.A.D. songs - if you could ever describe S.O.A.D. conventional. But if you rank David Gray or Texas as your favourite artists, then it's probably best to avoid this.

System of a Down has always been a great, daring band, and this album proves it even more, likely being even sharper than all of their previous efforts. Clocking in at around 36 minutes, it not only whets the appetite for the upcoming 'Hypnotize', but also restores my faith in good ol' brainy metal. This album excedes my expectations in every way, and is off the wall and politically charged, all at once. "B.Y.O.B." is amazing, "Cigaro" is a chunk of hillarious cock rock, and the closer, "Lost In Hollywood" is a very touching song, with the vocal intweaving of Tankian and Malakien working to a sublime extent. Malakien's vocals are put much more front-and-center with this album, though thankfully, Serj is not undercut in any way. Overall, every track on this album is excellent and I cannot praise it enough! I liked it better than the new NIN, QOTSA, and Garbage albums as well, so if you're going to pick one rock album to purchase out of the latest crop, make "Mesmerize" the one. Here is the problem I have with this CD and had a bit with Toxicity: Their first album was a mixture of funny and serious. The fans love the funny, and the serious rocked . But most of all it was an album straight from their heart. Toxicity brought forward their best written song to date, Chop Suey, among other greats, but it made their silly songs seem..well, silly. This album, even more so. Now we sense a huge gap in genuineness between the great songs and songs meant to be funny, which sound like they are trying too hard. If it's for our sake SOAD, please dont waste the space. We will still like Sugar and Devil . But we dont need them on every album if it's not in your heart to make songs like that anymore. Mezmerize contains all of the things we love about System Of A Down, but somehow the album just doesn't impress as it should. In fact, it's not even as good as Steal This Album, which was nothing but "throwaways". A significant problem is the sound, which is weirdly hollow and pro-tooled for a Rick Rubin production; the guitars are mixed way too high and the drums too low. A significant problem is the sound, which is weirdly hollow and pro-tooled for a Rick Rubin production; the guitars are mixed way too high and the drums too low. It just lacks "bang". Another nag is that Daron Malakian takes up a lot more lead vocals on this outing, and he doesn't have a very compelling voice, to put it as nicely as possible. Finally, for this being only the first official System album in 4 years, it shows alarmingly little growth, instead relying on the same old System tricks, which were once dazzling but are now too familiar to be totally effective. There are great moments on Mezmerize, and few bands these days can produce the same thrill as a System song that truly coalesces in all the right ways. But here's hoping that this fall's sequel album, Hyponotize, thrillingly completes a story with a mildly uninspired beginning. Expand

Not bad, but definetly not good. The first two were way better. Even the collection of B-side and other rarities was a better record. Why? Cause the guitarist should play guitar and stop trying to sing or scream. Frustrating really. Some song still are good though. And the lyrics are way poorer than on the first two. Not a bad cd, but disapointing from such a great band.

The songs don't have the fluidity of their work on Toxicity and their self-titled release, but still manage to maintain some sense of cohesiveness. I agree with the kid who says Fugazi are truer to hardcore than this MTV-ready, bullshit frat boy rock. Whoever says Fugazi have no claim to hardcore better check their fucking history. Even the the most hardcore SOAD fans might not like this right away, but it grows on you and I can't stop listening to it. I just wish they would have used the sound they started out with on their original EP.

I've always been a SOAD fan but I must say I was a little disapointed by this album. It's too poppy ! I like them when they're frantic, when the melodies and textures of their songs change unexpectably, when the chorus are filled with guitars (more than one, please !) and when Serj sings alone (although I don't mind a little Daron every now and then). Except for a few I've always been a SOAD fan but I must say I was a little disapointed by this album. It's too poppy ! Except for a few great songs (BYOB, Cigaro, This cocaïne...), the album is not great. Some parts of songs are real good though (Revenga would be a great song if it were not of the chorus; the same is true for some part od Old Statue, Old School Hollywood sounds great despite the keyborad and I enjoy Violent Pornography, but again the chorus is not so good), but all in all, I don't think the album deserves all the praise it received. Certainly not a classic. Expand

System of a Down is an aquired taste, which is why so many people don't like the music. I found it funny the person who said this album was terrible and then admitted that they hadn't even heard the whole thing. Chris C must be deaf! This DOES NOT deserve a 1! a. MCR sound nothing like SOAD b. You can't sing, can you? c. SOAD aren't a horrible band. d. "Pathetic goth losers" don't listen to them (probably, I wouldn't know). e. If they did, that wouldn't make the music bad, it would mean people listen to it. 10/10; that is all.

This a good rock album, but technically its not a good System of a Down album. Over the years, SOAD has vastly improved in their musical ability, but all the while their ability to write innovative songs has lost its oomph. They seem to be suffering to a similar fate that KoRn is going through. Simply outstanding. Toxicity was great but Mesmerize shows the band has evolutioned 10000 steps further. They've got the same attitude towards music Faith No More had. And, from my point of view, that's one hell of a compliment.

I wasn't impressed after so many listens to this album. But man those guys sure can make good music. You can't go and compare a hill with a mountain. SOAD's far from being the best band ever. But their lyricism is definitely top-notch. I'd like to see them sing with Bustah Rhymes one of these days. They did make a song with Wu-Tang Clan in the past and it worked well. Okay, so this album is full of what-have-you's. SOAD like to turn the volume up and give it their all. And why not? It's a great way to make an evening's entertainment- even though anyone that is used to listening to SOAD knows their songs are very pre-mature in their endings. They shoot bullets at tons of people and it's fun to see that some of those that review this album have no idea what is said. Maybe just having ears ain't enough pal. You need culture, too. SOAD's best album to date if you ask me. Their dynamic, creative, and simply awesome metal sound...that's a given. But they manage to put a large percentage of the world's problems into perspective, war. War's a party, they say sarcastically, a party that will just shoo away all the world's evil...when really it creates evil, increasing death and decay, achieving little.
