It's different. It's well-written. It's emotive. Those three things are hard enough to find in music these days, let alone in one place.

Just as Shuman himself demands attention within the crowded QOTSA line-up, Mini Mansions should shine in their own right regardless of their imposing origins. All they require are your ears. It would be rude to turn down such a delectable request.

A funhouse mirror of an album, Mini Mansions is a few shades lighter than Rekords Rekords' usual output, but it's still twisted and catchy enough to win over those more familiar with Shuman's day job.

With Queens of the Stone Age bassist Michael "Mikey Shoes" Shuman taking a breather from that instrument-instead, he performs guitar and drums and sings--the L.A. trio's debut is to shimmering Brit pop what QOTSA is to hard rock.

Choosing to keep the songs dark and dreary bogs down Mini Mansions. That criticism aside, the band know how to craft a song, letting it build and drop when necessary. [Dec 2010, p.114]
