Boucher's production prowess, beautifully complex and ambitious songwriting, is self-evident on Miss Anthropocene.

Miss Anthropocene takes everything about Grimes the musician – her uncanny ability to build a song out of parts no one ever thought to put together before, that idiosyncratic voice, her ear for a classic melody – and concisely packages it into her most penetrating record yet.

The record feels slick and polished, yet natural and unnatural. Like Grimes’ previous music, it’s a scary, ambient, and muddlingly beautiful mess.

It’s a record stuffed with imagination and packed with beauty. It’s also a fitting next step for an artist who’s built her reputation as someone who refuses to keep in step with the rest of the world.

Ultimately an excellent record. Where the message is muddied, thankfully the music is often, simply put, beautiful.

‘Miss Anthropocene’ is undoubtedly the singer’s darkest album yet, the result perhaps of a rollercoaster half-decade or maybe just of an artist who’s never really given two fucks about playing the radio-friendly commercial game.

Miss Anthropocene is a Kanye West of a listening experience. Strengthened by listening less hard and chilling out. Weakened by due diligence and the artist’s cerebral disconnect between what she's great at making and who she believes she is.

Grimes skillfully employs the industrial-pop Bjork made famous on 1994’s Post, while also delving into the punk-pop sounds of the 2000s alongside some Madonna-esque folktronica. The themes are dark, but the album feels celebratory in parts, acting as the soundtrack to a science fiction, warehouse dance party. Admittedly it loses steam in its final tracks, and seems to end abruptly (if there was a narrative stringing the album together we didn’t leave with much closure). However, this at-times challenging listen is one of the most ambitious projects of the year so far, and one that demands to be heard. Expand
