While dark is not have to be too dark, Miss Anthropocene failed to depict what's going to happen in the worst post-apocalypse. The experience of each song emulated in still life paintings in an exhibition room but not embodying the whole surroundings, resulting in dullness, run-of-the-mill and limited facets of climate change destruction.

IDORU is the perfect way to end the album, so I'd say skip the deluxe version when you are listening to the album as a whole. While I did like 'We Appreciate Power' as a single it just doesn't fit into the album as a whole, so I'm glad they left it out. As an album this is everything I expected it to be. Didn't disappoint at all.
Highlights: Love how 'Delete Forever' sits in the album.

Highlights: Love how 'Delete Forever' sits in the album. Flipped when I heard the 'Deewani Mastani' sample in 4AM; that song's a belter. So is 'My Name is Dark' - the NIN influence is unmistakable. The pre-chorus from IDORU is one of my favourite moments from the album. The way she sings 'this is what I aaaam' and '...understaaaand' is just love. That's the thing about this album: she blends the familiar and unfamiliar, simple and experimental, mellow and harsh, rage and helplessness, pain and euphoria so seamlessly and beautifully in this album.
Hence I don't think We Appreciate Power belongs here. Disrupts the flow of the album.
There are however a couple of tracks I end up skipping once in a while. But they're still pretty good in the whole scheme of the album so I won't really have a go at them.

8.5/10 (rounded to 9 for Metacritic)

Even if it is more accessible than previous Grimes records, "Miss Anthropocene" remains one of those albums that feel like treats from artists who never fall short of impressing us. It is as chaotic as the themes that she dives in (global warming, death, modern lives and depression..). Bouchard experiments with beats ('Violence', an EDM-song that sounds like nothing she's done before), features (all of the lyrics on the excellent 'Darkseid' are in asian by rapper 潘PAN), and vocals ('New Gods' may have the creepiest Grimes vocals ever). However, a stand-out on the album is 'Delete Forever', which is a simple guitar-based track showcasing Grimes' vocals without any effects (a first for the artist).
"Miss Anthropocene" is yet another re-introduction to Grimes and all the musical genius she has in her head and her heart.

Grimes intelligence amazes us again. Is incredible how she created (produced, directed, and etc.) a whole concept surrounding the climate change and artificial intelligence almost like a mythology (Miss Anthropocene herself and War Nymph are goddesses), while working with multiple sounds, arrangements and lyrics to build particular "atmospheres" for each song. When listening the album you'll probably feel a different amount of feelings, such as rage ( in "My Name Is Dark"), some kind of sensuality ("Violence"), sadness ("Delete Forever"), and apathy ("You'll miss me when I'm not around"). a Grimes mais uma vez entrega um super produção e é impossível comentar sobre o assunto pois me sinto totalmente incapaz. It’s an impressive album - beautiful at times, but mostly operatic, angelic, demonic and apocalyptic. The themes are dark, but the album feels celebratory in parts, acting as the soundtrack to a science fiction, warehouse dance party. Admittedly it loses steam in its final tracks, and seems to end abruptly (if there was a narrative stringing the album together we didn’t leave with much closure). However, this at-times challenging listen is one of the most ambitious projects of the year so far, and one that demands to be heard. Expand

For practical purposes, this is an instrumental album - most of the lyrics are either "aahs" and "oohs" or unintelligible, sometimes in a grade-school voice, to the point that when you can actually hear the words you want to play the song a few times just out of curiosity ("You'll Miss Me When I'm Not Around" and the slamming "We Appreciate Power" show just how effective this album could have been before they too succumb to effects and gimmicks). Let's face it, if you can't make out the lyrics, you're saying nothing. Grimes says nothing well, but her overproduced twists and turns ruin good ideas. The "look what I can do" thing has felled better artists, at least mainstream-acceptance-wise (Imogen Heap, anyone?), and you can hear the kitchen sink crying for release on every track of this effect-soaked beautiful mess. Did this woman just discover the reverb switch? Belfegore was crisper. (Google it, kids.) Expand

A definitively original proposal in the Electronic and Experimental Pop industry which musical vision has won public quickly. Grimes is Claire Bouches that has been focused on producing her own audio and visual material. Director of videoclips and her own producer, she comes back after 5 years to present a project that, if not it's not that accessible, it will seduce a big public with an intelligent, peculiar and self-aware with its own narrative and technique Pop. This album, while less accessible than Art Angels, is still very much Grimes. Had she not released so many of the tracks as singles early on it could have made more of an impact, but it still stands out as a sonic and conceptual masterpiece worthy of a much higher score than 79. I give this album a 10/10.

Feels new and well worn at the same time. Easy to fall into the album, enjoyable to listen through on repeat. Hear vibes of some of my other favorite artists. Will wake up almost humming some of these songs, and then proceed to do so.

This album is definitely a weird one. But it will grow on you more and more with each listen. There are a few duds on this album, but its made up by the inclusion of some really great songs.

The work grimes has done is ahead of its time, it’s so experimental and shes one of few artists I know who are willing to risk it all to be true to herself and express what is in her mind. I love the theme and it’s message, I would recommend my all friends to meet Miss Anthropocene :)

I am not very familiar with grimes music, so it is quite exotic for me, it fulfills its objective of taking me on a journey through another universe, even though I was not completely convinced in many of its songs i did not manage to connect with the beginning of her songs to finish meeting her in the middle.

Miss Anthropoecene is a dark, dreamy and sometimes hypnotic album that makes you feel like you're floating in space, helpless and alone. But the album is let down by some confusing choices in the tracklist and lyrical themes, and by the repetitiveness of some tracks. But the album is let down by some confusing choices in the tracklist and lyrical themes, and by the repetitiveness of some tracks. The project starts with honestly one of my favourite tracks here, So Heavy I Fell Through the Earth. The production, lyrics and feeling of this one is so hypnotic and heavy; I literally feel like I'm falling or floating or something. Darkseid has an incredibly dark beat and is great production wise, and I love the spoken word 'unrest is in our souls...' parts - but most of the song is in some high pitched Chinese which feels so out of place. There's nothing wrong with having foreign languages in 'English' songs, but this just feels like a 'how can I be quirky and different' decision and doesn't actually add anything - and it kind of ruins the song for me. Delete Forever is a touching, acoustic guitar track concerning the effects of drugs and drug overdoses - but it does not fit in the album at all. This should have been a standalone single or a bonus deluxe track, but as the third song it's so jarring... On a side note, from what I've read about this album from interviews etc. this album is apparently meant to be about climate change. Yep... climate change. I honestly don't think anyone would have picked up on that if Grimes hadn't straight up told us, because it's barely noticeable. The only two tracks that you could see hints of that theme in are the next one, Violence, and New Gods. Violence is a merciful return to the dark and dreamy vibe from before and is surprisingly catchy, but the lyrics feel uninspired and more about BDSM than the climate. And New Gods isn't very good either as Grimes' voice just isn't powerful enough to pull off what she's trying to do. 4AM is a banger, but the Bollywood samples feels like a strange choice to make and not in a good way. My Name Is Dark is one of the few times where the song starts off well, but it gets pretty repetitive towards the end and I catch myself sitting there waiting for the track to end. The next track is a good song, nothing much to say about it other than it's good. Before the fever however sounds like an homage to the first track (which I really liked), expect this one is worse in every way and forgettable. We end decently with IDORU which makes me feel like we're back at Earth from all this time floating in space (the lyrics about love, possibly for the planet, and the bird samples). I wish there was a bigger and grander finish, but overall this was a good album. Yes there were moments which had me annoyed, confused and bored, but the production is immaculate pretty much throughout and I did enjoy the majority of the songs here. Expand

I love how each of these tracks make me feel. The music lifts my mood everyday on my drive to work. It transports me. Grimes' high notes are beautiful and the beats are sick. The messages behind this project make me happy as a conservationist. Claire has so much talent it pours out in this work. A year after its release and I am still listening, so this album sustains for me.

very trippy album, I listen to it mostly to fall asleep, or think, or take walks while feeling like i'm stuck in outer space. i love the heavy sounds and weird atmosphere of the whole album, not all songs hit the same way emotionnally though, but i still appreciate the musical experiments she goes through overall !

For an artist whose past two albums were as impeccably curated as they were produced, the non-cohesiveness of Miss Anthropocene is bit of a disappointment, in spite of the record’s highlights.

Ultimately an excellent record. Where the message is muddied, thankfully the music is often, simply put, beautiful.

Miss Anthropocene is not quite as brilliantly weird as its predecessor, but is certainly compelling enough to maintain Grimes' status as one of the most fascinating pop stars on the planet. [May 2020, p.105]
