True to form - very classic sounding and follows up their first two releases well. This release may not quite be to the level of their previous releases, but still such as a satisfying lineup of dubbed harmonic tones. Khruangbin fans could not have asked for much more than this. A success!

Khruangbin is a trio from Texas conformed by Laura Lee, Mark Speer, and Donald "DJ" Johnson. "Con Todo El Mundo" (2018) was a solid and nice sail through the acoustic waters of the world, but a bigger surprise moved me in "Mordechai", that even with its essence and style, the trio give us a trip full of harmony. There's a compress sensation in the general aura of "Mordechai", but I attribute it to the objective of the production that, with help of Steve Christensen, is magic, because even with its intensity, the musical aura demands tranquility: a smooth rhythm to enjoy its speech, sensibility, and strength full of details. If the world could sing, "Mordechai" would be a lullaby full of folklore and origin to the travelers of the Earth seeking the wonders of mother nature. Khruangbin is the globetrotters that have heard the song in the wind and have translated it into their music with so much love that I hope with all my heart it never stops.

This album provides a link between previous Khruangbin albums, and has an overall more "accessible" feel to it, with the presence of more vocals and some radio friendly tunes. Stylistically, this is very similar to previous albums but does lack an overall "theme" of influence or style, but I feel this is what the band were going for. Staying true to form with some excellent melodic parts.

Some of the songs can get a bit repetitive at times, but overall a groovy and pleasant album to listen to, with some pretty cool bass riffs.

Khruangbin haven't forgotten the global jukebox that got them this far: Turkish psychedelia, flamenco palmas, the shimmering heat of Houston, dub ... The ice has definitely melted. [Sep 2020, p.82]

Mordechai, for all its use of vocals, really shows off the chops and interplay of the drums, bass, and guitar at Khruangbin's core. Even the songs that didn't grab me at first are a pleasure to listen to for the way Speer, Lee, and Johnson play together.

The Houston retro perfectionists create great global grooves with multilingual narratives. [Jul 2020, p.87]
