  • Summary: Still lowercase, the alt-rock band led by Rob Thomas (who is perhaps more famous for "Smooth" on Santana's 1999 album) returns with their third album, the first on which the band shared songwriting duties as a unit.

  1. From the onset, this disc excels on a new level.
  2. If Foreigner was still an active, young band, it would sound a lot like Matchbox Twenty.
  3. Matchbox Twenty now seem almost dignified, a fact that is as much a tribute to their advancing abilities as it is to how shamelessly their sellout successors suck.

Thomas' lyrics are too frequently overwraught. [Mar 2003, p.98]

Their songs aren't as good as their playing. [Apr 2003, p.98]
  6. Blender

Thomas's songs derive power from being derivative. [#13, p.98]

I'd give it an 11 if i could. Friends have said that Disease has an element of a Santana song about it, and since i have found out that I'd give it an 11 if i could. Friends have said that Disease has an element of a Santana song about it, and since i have found out that Rob Thomas was in fact involved with 'Smooth', i can see why. The album contains variety, yet all the songs share one aspect: they're so damn good! Expand

I'm sure this was all a well orchestrated joke, this lavishing of praise on a band so dry and soulless that they might not even exist. I'm sure this was all a well orchestrated joke, this lavishing of praise on a band so dry and soulless that they might not even exist. Matchbox Twenty (no, I refuse to spell it lowercase: a band this terrible does not get to rewrite the rules of english) embodies everything banal, amelodic, and forgettable in popular music. There isn't anything distinct about their music, aside from their ability to transmute melody into treacle In short, this album could be compared to the following items: unsweetened oatmeal, the color beige, lukewarm water, or a big bowl of feces.
