  1. Malin has always been a talent, but here, he parlays everything he does well into a single 45-minute burst, and he reaches his pinnacle as a result.

New York Before the War isn't quite a full-on rock & roll album, but it comes close enough that Malin has more space to move around than on his more subdued solo works, and he sounds energized and eloquent on these 13 tunes.

Uptempo numbers like the aforementioned are the strength of New York Before the War, though there are a few subtle moments that are equally rewarding.

Malin would've been wise to trim the 13 songs down to 10, thus eliminating the soggy middle of this otherwise crisp platter. [Apr 2015, p.80]

As a set of songs it works fine. [May 2015, p.105]

There is nothing new in Malin’s depiction of New York, and that may be the whole point: He wants this milieu to be instantly familiar.

There's a pleasing magpie approach to his songwriting.... At times, however, his influences are too transparently obvious. [Apr 2015, p.107]
