Bet you didn’t know that the legendary country singer, Shania Twain, released a new album, did you? It took her 15 years to do so but “Now” has finally made its way to the music stores. There was obviously a reason behind this big hiatus: besides failed romances, the country singer was diagnosed with dysphonia and lyme disease which almost caused her to lose her singing voice. There was obviously a reason behind this big hiatus: besides failed romances, the country singer was diagnosed with dysphonia and lyme disease which almost caused her to lose her singing voice. Thankfully, the slow recovery process worked and Shania found the strength to come back on her feet.

It’s impressive to think that Shania’s previous release takes us back to 2002. “Up!” was the name of the record and to even think it gave us classics such as “I’m Gonna Getcha Good!” or “Ka-Ching” brings a huge amount of nostalgia to our minds, doesn’t it?

Well, times have changed. I guess it’s safe to say that as she got older, Shania became more serious about herself and about her music and left the good fun tunes behind. “Now” - released roughly a month ago - doesn’t feature any bops à la “That Don’t Impress Me Much” or à la “Man! I Feel Like a Woman”. Instead, the record features a bunch of songs dedicated to her ex-husband that left her for another woman and a bunch of empowering songs to attempt to cheer up whoever is feeling down… If they’re into country.

Unfortunately, the album doesn’t feature many highlights and the ones that catch your attention, may not do it for the best reasons. Let’s talk about “Poor Me” as it can serve as a great representation of the record. Why? Shania feels sorry for herself and constantly repeats “still can’t believe he’d leave me to love her”, a constant emotion expressed during the entire record and, on top of that, the song feels uninspired. You only need the first second to think: “Where do I recognize this from?” From the 2016 smash hit “Don’t Let Me Down” by The Chainsmokers. The beat is almost identical. “Poor Me” is the Pop song of the record and, to be honest, the ONLY track that could get some attention from the general public.

“Light Of My Life” - a song that sounds really good until the chorus kicks in - along with “Where Do You Think You’re Going?” and the album’s first single “Life’s About To Get Good” are three other songs where Shania discusses her heartbreak. While I actually like all of those songs sonically, lyrically they sound corny and immature which kind of proves Shania is still yet to overcome her heartbreak.

Maybe that’s why she decided to fill the other half of the record with uplifting songs such as the album opener “Swingin’ With My Eyes Closed”, the (fake) careless “More Fun” or the cringe-worthy “You Can’t Buy Love” where she wraps the song with the most annoying “yeah” I have ever heard in my life… But that’s quite specific.

In summary, “Now” is a lackluster record. Despite the attempts of mixing a bit of pop (“I’m Alright”) and rock n roll (“Roll Me On The River”) into country, it ends up sounding dated and therefore bringing nothing new to the game or even to her career. While I confess, I truly enjoyed half of it, I don’t think I will be replaying the album, or even those songs, much more times. Either way, glad she is back and healthy!

It's a perfect mess and that's not compliment. It's a shame that Shania has lost her voice and also the rhythm, I believe that "Now" is a new debut album, a new career restart, so it's normal to be rusty. What hurts is that there was a lot of expectation in an uptempo song that does not exist. Highlight for "Poor Me", "Swingin 'With My Eyes Closed" and "Home Now".

These are pleasant songs, but Twain and Lange’s perfectionism meant even the weakest cuts on The Woman in Me and Come on Over were weapons-grade pop.

This is a record bursting with indecision and excess, but that excess is revealing; we're shown more of Shania's emotion than ever here. It's enough to make Now one of the best pop albums of the year.

The songs are forgettable odes to familiar topics--home, heartbreak, dusting yourself off and picking yourself back up--that wouldn’t get a second glance if they’d been penned by someone less famous. Add to that some horrifically hackneyed clichés.
