An album that is startling as it is likeable. [Apr 2014, p.74]

With its familiar landmarks interrupted by imaginative mood swings, Odludek offers an engaging listen.

Odludek does its job well enough as it pulses forward, though it strangely doesn’t stick as deeply as you might expect.

For an old dog, he's got some promising new tricks.

When word of a Jimi Goodwin album first got out, the reaction was to hope for a trifle at best and fear a disaster at worst. Instead, it’s the rare solo album that builds on the singer’s day job without turning its back on it. File under: Pleasant surprise.

Goodwin could be a solo star yet.

Somewhere in between his rich, weathered baritone and his self-deprecating lyrics, the listener is charmed into submission, and it all goes down like a perfectly sessionable ale, albeit one with peculiar origins.

Although the urge for transformation is commendable, sometimes a change isn’t quite as good as a rest.

This is very much Goodwin's record, the work of a man revelling in his own company. [May 2014, p.88]

His first solo album is a decent riposte: full of urgent, abrasive songs on which Goodwin sounds both creatively invigorated and thoroughly pissed off.

While they do make for a well-structured collection of songs, individual tracks are often disappointing and the result feels like a half-hearted series of Doctor Who; its audience sustained more by thrilling trailers and the promise of fulfilment than any real substance

Though occasionally he could have done with his band mates to act as a quality control barometer, overall Odludek shows that Goodwin made the right choice to step back onto the treadmill.

Odludek feels more like a mixtape than a sole artist's work. [Apr 2014, p.107]

Odludek is a mixed bag, then. But it’s to Goodwin’s credit that the bravery he shows in trying to pull so much into one album is more often than not worthwhile.

The result is an ambitious, varied, but largely unlovable work, its individual songs crammed with too many divergent ideas.

I've heard the word 'mixtape' used several times in reviews for this, but it really doesnt do the album justice. It's eclectic, but even the barmy 'Man Vs Dingo' worms it's way in to your head and stays there. There's plenty to love in this record, warmth, hope, sadness, anger and a whole lot more, all delivered by one of the the most soulful voice coming out of the UK right now. Glorious album. Get it.
