The biggest problem with Oh My My is that OneRepublic forsakes the few characteristics that once made them relatively unique in favor of bland, done-to-death radio pop.

I have no idea what they were going for. The album seems to have no cohesive sound/direction, and the songs as stand alone singles really aren't that good. A real step down after Waking Up & Native. After OneRepublic’s amazing Native, it was gonna be hard to make anything that was even comparable to it. Native had received positiveAfter OneRepublic’s amazing Native, it was gonna be hard to make anything that was even comparable to it. Native had received positive critical reception, and was known as their best album amongst many fans. Oh My My was released 3 years later, and wow it is almost just as good. This album has 16 songs long, and not once does it feel long. Let’s Hurt tonight is an explosive opener. Future Looks Good is one of the best and most meaningful songs OneRepublic has ever released. Oh My My is a simple head bopper, and Kids is a catchy, unforgettable, coming of age song. Dream and A.I is so unique and funky, and Better is so weird and out there, yet still remains a really good song. Born, and Lift Me Up are great awe inspiring and uplifting tracks, while Choke is a dramatic and sad song. Human is deep and powerful song. NBHD and Wherever I Go are meaningful and extremely catchy, and Heaven is one of the bands best closing tracks. This album is much different to the rest of their discography, with new sounds and new themes. But that’s what I love about it so much. It’s so different but it’s able to maintain the feeling that you’re listening to a OneRepublic album. Whether this type of music fits your style, you have to admit, behind the layers of the booming choruses, these songs are about something more compelling. Humans. That is what this album really boils down too. While this album has some of the bands most melodic songs, almost all of them are about the ups and downs of life, and the things that people have to deal with. This it is truly irresistible, especially when it is done right as on this record. Oh My My has to be the most human album I’ve ever heard. I had this album on repeat for 2016 and 2017, and I still listen to it 3 years after it’s release. OneRepublic next album will have to be really great to stand it’s own to this, but I can’t express how excited I am for whatever their next effort is. Full Review »
