With 2021 not yet at the halfway point, it’s hard to imagine many other albums coming along that could match the combination of emotional potency, melodic fluency, social significance and heartrending beauty in Russell’s retelling of a lifetime’s worth of debasement and self-reclamation.

She begins with “Montreal,” singing in both French and English, with a voice so beautiful that it’s difficult to imagine the pain she recollects. “Persephone,” replete with a brief clarinet solo, is positively exultant as Russell sings an ode to her teenage girlfriend whose home provided refuge for Russell during her teenage years. “The Runner” swaggers confidently, spurred by the background vocals and a steady, emphatic beat.

As difficult and cathartic as the subject matter is, it's clear that she has come out on the other end and is not only thriving as an artist, but has found peace as a human. Having such a rich and compelling story to tell on a debut album is rare, and Russell delivers her tale with the utmost grace and finesse.

It goes beyond the listener reading a page of her diary it is a visual display of the human experience that has Allison's name written on all over it. You may not have gone through the exact journey she has but the feeling she has been able to conjure up in this records may seem familiar to most.
