Each song seems subtle, even sparse, but with repeated listens the complexity of the arrangements starts to astound. [Jan 2022, p.14]

While a little less grace and a little more grit could have benefitted their second pairing, Robert Plant and Allison Krauss’ “Raise the Roof” is nice and rough in all the right places.

There is not a whiff of a cynical retread of old tricks during Raise the Roof, which manages the trick of coming across both sophisticatedly polished and winningly raw and in-the-moment.

It's another record to follow deep into the bayou, chasing the will-o-the-wisp harmonies. [Dec 2021, p.70]

Perhaps the most appealing part of the album is that regardless of what sound, style or location these songs came from—British folk, New Orleans soul, Bakersfield country—they sound cohesive and of a piece in the hands of Plant and Krauss. In other words, the singers make these songs sound like their own.

Maybe after the stresses and strains of the past couple of years we need a familiar embrace to soothe away our pain. Raise The Roof fits the bill, even if it might win fewer prizes for originality than its predecessor.

With clever song selection and excellent execution, Raise the Roof turns the spotlight on craft. It might not quite match its predecessor, but it sounds too confident to worry about that.

I just keep listening to it and after several repeats, it sounds even better. The highest level of musicianship from both sides, also very good arrangements and production by T-Bone Burnett. An americana mix of country rock, rockabilly and soul that range from decent to great. It is Plant's vocals that elevate this album to something special. Now in his 8th decade on the planet, he gives a performance full of soulful gravity. Alison Kraus plays her part too of course and together they complement each other superbly. The question of whether it is the song or the singer that impresses is relevant here. It's probably both. Expand
