Fake Train and New Plastic Ideas hold important places in the history of 90s music, not to mention those of punk and indie as a whole. And they set the tone for unimagined Unwound greatness to come (which will be chronicled in subsequent volumes of the box-set series). But those two albums, and the tracks that accompany them on Rat Conspiracy, transcend time, place, attitude, and even the sprawling continuum of influence.

The set is essential to any fan, and these records are near-perfect documents of the roots of indie rock and D.I.Y. culture that started growing in the unheard music and handmade expressions of the early '90s.

For all their three-pronged power and musical fluidity, Unwound didn't, perhaps, quite make music which transcended the genres, styles and subcultures it was associated with.... If nothing else, this two-hour compendium of righteous, often superlative noise demonstrates that they could also cater to dancin' feet, and ears looking to be bled like radiators.

There was more to the melody of Unwound than just a few simple, catchy primitive riffs. [No. 107, p.61]

The best thing about Rat Conspiracy is the reminder that this stuff feels fresh now, cutting edge, even timeless.

But the real truth about box sets such as Rat Conspiracy is that they have a meaning for the here-and-now that is quite different than the meaning accessible at the time of the primary releases covered here, and that meaning is one that threatens to make Unwound the 90s band for the 2010s (the teens). The Rat Conspiracy box reveals a band that was so far ahead of its time it might as well be a band from the future. Full Review »
