Twenty-five years in, how well these two sides of a sung coin fit together and complement each other remains remarkable.

Fortunately, the music and, above all, the voices of the two singers fight through the darkness. The voices complement, converse and contradict, like sisters finishing or amplifying each other's sentences.

The tales they tell are, while gruesome, well told. And they’ve never sounded better; not only has the time off done no damage to their brash, south-of-the-Ohio harmonies, but the band has taken on the challenge of sounding bigger than ever before and come out triumphant.

Haunting songs rooted in old-time country, Southern Gothic and humming electric ambience. [Mar 2016, p.72]

The songs on Scheherazade are original, though richly informed by traditional Americana. Most of them sound like they could be from any time in the last 80 years.

Scheherazade isn't exactly the Feel Good Album of 2016, but being lost and forsaken with Freakwater is a more satisfying experience than feeling perky with most other acts, and Scheherazade is a brilliant reminder of what Catherine Irwin and Janet Beveridge Bean do so strikingly well.

Longtime fans who have patiently waited for this resurgence will be thrilled with results that gently tug at the boundaries of their established sound. But even listeners new to the Freakwater experience can start here and work backwards through a rich catalog dedicated to the darker roots of Americana.

There’s something invigorating about hearing two alt-country veterans take apart their tried-and-true sound and reassemble it slightly askew, and Scheherazade is not only their most modern-sounding record; it might be their best since Old Paint.

Overall Scheherazade is a masterful step forward for Freakwater with an eye on its influences and history. Its songs grapple with duality, with a balance between muddy, dirty roots music and clear, split open beauty, and the album balances itself so well in that regard.

Freakwater never recorded a single note trying to win over anyone or anything - they just work because they must, making records ofFreakwater never recorded a single note trying to win over anyone or anything - they just work because they must, making records of consistently higher quality than virtually anyone in contemporary recorded music. Scheherazade, murky and opaque, continues Freakwater’s commitment to if-you-get-it-great-if-you-don’t-move-on. Fans who know their ambitious and most fully-realized 1999 LP End Time will appreciate younger-cousin Scheherezade, each the best examples of co-pilots Janet Beveridge Bean and Catherine Irwin in creative balance. Writing so separately that they might as well be in mortal combat, yet singing with voices so inextricably intertwined, the result is a still yet another eat-your-heart-out affair for their fans and followers, taking all on a curly curve upward into heaven or downward into the abyss, depending entirely on your perspective on the matter. Catherine and Janet have broken through with the most amazing album of original music from Freakwater. This work will stand the test ofCatherine and Janet have broken through with the most amazing album of original music from Freakwater. This work will stand the test of time--it sounds fresh after literally hundreds of listens, a true feat for any record. I continually discover new delights--sometimes something as simple as realizing it is Janet who is singing, rather than Catherine (and the other way around). These true artists are at the peak of their powers--I'm glad to be alive during this time in history to hear this album. I always thought they were great; but Scheherezade has taken them to a new level of accomplishment. Every cut is refreshing. Well done-- and by the whole team they assembled to put it all together. Love you all! Full Review »
