With a soundtrack that captures the spirit of the comics with such fervency, conviction and discipline, Scott Pilgrim vs The World looks set to be a lot less dislikable than you might've hoped.
-
Somehow, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World's music remains true not just to the comic, but to the work of everyone involved in the story at every stage, with plenty of fun and heart to boot.
-
The clutch of songs performed by make-believe bands are complemented well by a supporting cast including Blood Red Shoes, The Rolling Stones, T. Rex and The Bluetones.
-
"Garbage Truck" is the keeper, with a fuzz-punk groove that's no laughing matter. Elsewhere you get T. Rex's classic "Teenage Dream," as well as a psych-country cover of Sade's "By Your Side" by Beachwood Sparks.
-
Like a good mixtape, the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack works less as a primetime rock album and more as an entry point to some great work that those on the margin may have missed. And for what it's worth, it's the best soundtrack Cera has ever been associated with.
-
Whereas many modern film soundtracks are glorified compilation discs with a seemingly random track selection, the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World soundtrack is very thoughtful in its curation and stands as a very accurate interpretation of O'Malley's fictional world.
-
In the context of the movie almost all of these songs are great. But as a soundtrack album, Scott Pilgrim doesn't reach the same greatness.
-
The charm of those songs fades outside the film, leaving the Nigel Godrich- produced soundtrack to get over on a lush new Beck song, "Ramona," and some real garage rock, notably Plumtree's Nineties nugget "Scott Pilgrim," which proves naif enthusiasm doesn't need irony to be cute.
-
Like the similarly star-studded (but bland) "Twilight" and (insufferably twee) "Juno" soundtracks, Scott Pilgrim is something less than the sum of its parts.
