The good news is that Trivium finally sound like the balls-out heavy metal band they have long desired to be.

Silence In The Snow is not a classic album, but this puts Trivium firmly back on course.

Silence in the Snow resolutely satisfies the diehard fan, while at the same time nothing terribly brilliant materializes from that new trick up their sleeve, either.

Every other record in their catalog hinted at their further development as a metal unit; this one doesn't. Trivium are using the building blocks of metal to pursue a wider, more nuanced, musical direction.

Having blown out his vocals back in 2014, Heafy ditches the screams and deep growls that have comprised every album up until this point. It's the first Trivium album to feature no unclean vocals of any kind.

This initially sent up many red flags for me. However, once I dove into the album I found a great appreciation for the band's work. They adopt a more melodic metal style while losing none of their power. The results might just be the best album of their career.

The reason it all succeeds is do to Heafy's powerful and improved clean vocals. He's never sounded better when he's not screaming, and it allows for him to pull of styles I've never heard this band use before. It's impressive to see someone who rather recently blew out his vocal cords come back stronger than ever.

The band is still very much metal in sound. The instrumentals are still often heavy. The group still knows how to pull of exciting solos after all of these years, and how to use each instrument to amplify the tone of the song.

Despite the change in sound, this is still very much a Trivium album. You can still tell who this band is when listening to them, but now there's a fresh and exciting twist. The band doesn't break any new ground lyrically, but with everything else turning out so wonderfully it's hard to fault them to much for not making a complete evolution.

Trivium is back with something truly new. Even better is that it feels like a improvement. Not everyone is going to be able to appreciate this new Trivium with a twist. It might even alienate longtime fans more so than their switch back to Ascendancy style music after Shogun. However it's not hard to see how this album could very well open the band up to a wider audience of heavy metal fans. I find their work here to be near flawless, and I can't wait to see how they expand upon this in the future.

They changed their style into Heavy-metal but with some influence of metalcore sound.
This album is not the best in their discography but you must pay attention to this record, I think.

[ 6667767768776 = 86/13 = 6.6 ] Expand

Many fans are most likely going to turn this away while they clutch at their copies of Shogun and Ascendancy. Yet even with everything that has happened in the past two years, it’s surprising to see Trivium managing to pull off something as intriguing as this. Sure it’s not the best record that the band has come out with, but after this experiment it will certainly give audiences some curiosity as to what they will pull off next. Whatever the case, it’s pretty obvious that many will begin crying to see the old Trivium return in the near future. Expand

It demonstrates a retooled approach and refreshed energy but more often than not fails to channel it into anything worthwhile. It's unfortunate too, as the album comes very close to greatness on more than one instance but is let down by the majority of it's tracks. Silence in the Snow is also a dramatic departure from the bands earlier material, taking on a hard rock sound with more of a radio appeal. There are no screams, no growls, nothing but cleans on this album which is no necessarily a bad thing - Matt Heafy's clean vocals are the best they've ever been, alas they rely too much on studio tricks in order to give them more presence - this album will not stand up vocally live. Overall the album is far from terrible, but their next effort desperately needs to be more significant if the band wants to remain relevant in the current day. Expand

TheThe short version: The album is not bad, but as a long time fan, it failed to live up to expectations, and left me feeling unfulfilled. The lack of unclean vocals and slightly softer approach in regards to the music make this album more approachable, but less substantial as a metal album.

    The long version:
This album certainly isn't bad. Not by any stretch of the imagination. And musically, it's still a really good album, just as Trivium's albums from the very beginning have been.

Unfortunately, this failed to hit the the right spots for me. With Matt Heafy's vocal injury putting his unclean vocals out of commission (at least for the time being), the album takes a heavy step towards a softer tone. As someone who has been listening to Trivium for a long time, I was disappointed with this change. It wasn't what I expected, and wasn't really what I wanted. I feel like a lot of other fans (or at least the more vocals ones) agree with that sentiment.

It must be stated again that the album is NOT bad. It simply isn't what I was expecting, and left me dissatisfied. I am interested to see where they go from here.
