Nov 9, 2018The group has scaled down a bit (how much bigger could they get?) writing, rhapsodizing and crooning about lighter topics than usual. Similarly, the group--along with co-producers Rich Costey (Interpol), Mike Elizondo (Eminem, Fiona Apple) and Timbaland (Jay-Z, Missy Elliott)--has also changed up its sound with a mix of electro-punkish riffs and sprightly beats filtered into its densely layered orchestration. ... Refocusing their ambitions in a way that won’t alienate fans but also keeps them anticipating whatever might come next.
Kerrang!Nov 7, 2018As a neon-lit tonic to Drones, Simulation Theory is bang on the money. But as an exploration of a new frontier, it's a genuinely exciting musical adventure in its own right. [10 Nov 2018, p.53]
MojoNov 7, 2018This Giorgio Moroder-soundtracking-Black Mirror approach isn't always successful. ... The slick AOR of Something Human suggests their decision to move away from riff-rock isn't wholly misjudged. [Dec 2018, p.84]
Nov 9, 2018It’s clearly leagues below what they’re capable of, but they’re at least moving forward with the styles of music that they want to create, uninhibited by expectations rooted in the past. This is essentially a synth-pop album, one that is at times exciting and unconventional and at other times tasteless and rudimentary.

I would dare say this could be theirThis album is not Absolution or Origin Of Symmetry or Showbiz Muse. This is something really different. I would dare say this could be their most successful effort of them trying to be different. The songs are fresh, yet the sounds are still MUSE. This album perfectly blends their new direction with their old styles. I would give 8/10 after listening to their main tracks, but after done listening to their alternate versions of some of the songs, I am giving a solid 10. This kind of alternate versions remind me of the Muse's B-sides from those cassettes and CD eras.
My ranks are as follow
1. "The Dark Side" (Alternate Reality instrumental) - Hyper Chondriac Music to Hyper Music!!
2. "Pressure" (original and marching band version)
3. "Algorithm" (original and alternate reality)
4. "Dig Down" (acoustic gospel version)

Nov 9, 2018I went to sleep last night thinking, "The new Muse album will be releasing in the morning but I have a feeling it won't be that good." ButI went to sleep last night thinking, "The new Muse album will be releasing in the morning but I have a feeling it won't be that good." But after listening to it I was happy to be completely wrong not only is it a solid album but it's also very unique. My favourite songs from Simulation Theory are Break It To Me(it's one of their most weird songs), Propoganda(Muse and Timbaland have come out with a brilliant track) , The Dark Side and Thought Contagion. My least favorite songs are Something Human and Get Up and Fight. Muse have come out with a wicked album once again.… Expand

Being a huge fan of Muse, I was fully prepared to- but unfortunately this was just...meh? Having already heard a large majority of the songs already (they were released as singles weeks/months ago), only a handful of the songs were new. Algorithm gave me the false hope that I was in for a treat- it feels very Blade Runner-esque and was, I thought, setting the tone for the entire album. It wasn't. Break it To Me, Get Up and Fight, and Blockades are particularly bad. I don't have any qualms with Muse doing whatever they want with this new sound. I do lament their older stuff, however- even as recently as 2nd Law. Simulation Theory is a Hard pass.… Expand
