A debut masterpiece. It’s variety embellished with great lyricism and production makes this album one to remember. It’s interesting, meaningful and great music.

I have not heard a pure vocal talent like Joy Crookes since Amy Winehouse. Joy moves effortlessly between soul and jazz, her phrasing reminiscent of Nina Simone at times. This album is a revelatory experience and at only 23 I can’t even imagine where her talent will take her.

Skin takes in soul, jazz and trip-hop, and more than fulfils her early promise. [Dec 2021, p.90]

The guitar-led Kingdom pokes at Brexit and the messiness of our government but lacks personal touches, as does by-numbers ballad To Lose Someone. But these are mild complaints amid otherwise distinctive songwriting.

The 13 smooth jams showcase Joy Crookes not only as a vocalist or candid writer but as the new face of British soul. While many artists chase nostalgia, Crookes offers a different way forward by disregarding the traditional boundaries of classicism.
