Brutally hip-hop with post-punk tendencies, Ratking’s debut album is a wonderfully dystopic record that is as progressive as it is anarchist. Ratking really is that thing.

The real masterstroke of So It Goes is that it’s not: This is one for the here and now, as contemporary as New York hip-hop gets.

The trio's gifts mesh to deliver a truly idiosyncratic attack, as refreshing and labyrinthine a hip hop debut as New York has delivered since Company Flow's Funcrusher Plus. [May 2014, p.87]

This album is chilly and paranoid and urgent, sloppy as the city Ratking hails from.

So It Goes leaves a refreshing aftertaste on the musical palette and feeds the masses a full course of east coast education.

This is new, fresh, young rap with an edge.

On the whole, So It Goes covers a wide range of ground musically, sometimes making it hard to comprehend as a cohesive piece in its entirety. By doing so however, Ratking has made a rap album that is truly fitting for the modern New York.

Whether directly inspired by backpack rap or just embodying the raw energy of that era, the group has none of the preachy divisiveness that made that movement a half-joke.

Unrelenting and abrasive it may be, but So It Goes turns a new page in New York hip-hop.

So It Goes is as pure as they come, so strap in and get ready from some rich rewards and hard truths because this one returns hip-hop to a time when it was "dangerous," and in the best, most progressive way possible.

So It Goes comes as close to hardcore as an album with this sonic palette can: dense, immediate, energetic, and uniquely inclusive.

Ratking's greatest success is confidently offering a sound that feels untethered from expectations and bristles with the exhilarating energy of trying something new.

Wiki's flow is like a paint gun blasting out beautiful graffiti; Hak's warm hooks balance it all out.
  15. Here and there, though, it’s a bit of a grind.

So It Goes delivers on the promise they exhibited early on, successfully paying homage to NYC’s biggest hip-hop hitters, navigating busy, broken rhythms, and throwing up fresh perspectives with hazy, boom-bap production.

There’s often a disconnect between the production and what’s going on vocally, the two elements at times even working at cross purposes.

Their stinging, smart wordplay is dependably knotted and sneered, and even though it's difficult to separate their cadences, the collective passion present is undeniable. [No. 108, p.59]

As a starting point, So It Goes is a damn fine one.

The lyrics are amazing, the back-tracks are great, and the flow is smooth. All I have is love for album. Songs like "Canal" and "So It Goes" really stick out. I don't usually buy vinyls due to their current pricing, but this album deserves it. I would recommend this album anyone looking to get into underground hip-hop. Great album here. Full Review »

Lots to love, a little left to be desired, but extremely promising for a young groups' first effort. Canal and So Sick Stories are particularly good.
Production is tight, delivery is tight, and most of the features are on point.
