The twin sisters fully embrace new-wave synths and fuzzy rock rave-ups... while their reedy voices trace the cork-screw path of relationships good and bad. [17 Sep 2004, p.81]
  2. The key to 'So Jealous' is that it's a mall-prancing hit jukebox but with, y'know proper non-bubblegum pop sensibilities.
  3. Vocally weaving and ducking, they drag up memories of Voice of the Beehive, or a Siamese version of Susannah Hoffs from the Bangles. What stops them becoming an annoying pop hydra is their unadorned directness and sharp pop hooks.
  4. So Jealous is the most satisfying album Tegan and Sara have yet made.
  5. An album that is revolutionary in its identity politics if not entirely authentic in its sound.
  6. The streamlined zoom and precision of So Jealous makes their previous work seem tentative by comparison.
  7. So Jealous has a broad appeal, nicely connecting the dots between Avril Lavigne and Joan Jett, but shouldn't be slighted by the latter's fans for it's immediacy.
  8. It's hard to sound as sweet as Tegan & Sara and not come across as precious. But somehow this duo does it, and the result is fantastic.

Hook after hook after string of '60s jukebox melodies. [#12, p.104]

The subject matter eventually becomes a bit emotionally monochromatic, despite the broader sonic palette and the duo's fresh approach to mining such ancient territory. [3 Oct 2004]

An instantly loveable collection of sky-punching, new wave pop glory. [May 2005, p.117]

Their candour is as refreshing as it is revealing. [May 2005, p.108]
  13. While this is definitely a likeable album, and an extremely contagious pop effort at that, it's a hard one to get attached to.
  14. The brittle harmonies make So Jealous a little tough to warm up to, but combined with the thick-handled melodies and punchy arrangements, Tegan And Sara's look-at-us swagger generates drama.
  15. It's definitely a departure from their earlier albums -- or, more precisely, an evolution -- but in no way did they drop the ball. Instead, they may now be playing a different game.

I mean, they could be worse, I suppose...but with grating vocals, repetitive song structures and ridiculously self-absorbed lyrics they could certainly be a lot better. Carrie Brownstein would shoot them one look and they'd melt into little puddles of power chords and bad haircuts. Full Review »

So this is what guitar and power pop is all about. And what if the songs resemble past gems? They're all gems in their own right. So this is what guitar and power pop is all about. And what if the songs resemble past gems? They're all gems in their own right. It's very obvious to me: this is one of the albums of the decade (Well if you're a fan of Mouse On Mars then don't you even try to listen to it) Full Review »
