Given that she has synesthesia, I assume that Lorde must have had bright and shiny colors in mind when making ‘Solar Power’. However, my own synesthesia makes me see the artist’s third record as no other than a pale and tasteless shade of grey.
In her third album, Lorde clearly finds herself hesitating between three main directions. She goes from early 2000s summer tracks that seem to come out from a teen rom-com's ending credits (hello Robyn and Natalie Imbruglia), to 70s psychedelia and to 60s bonfire hippie folk – ‘Fallen Fruit’ almost sounds like a song from the Mamas & the Papas. This summery musical journey would have been enjoyable had Lorde not failed to capture the thrill, the dreaminess and the emotion of the aforementioned genres.
Having lost her creative energy and her love for risks, Ella Yelich-O’Connor now seems to have become your typical indie artist, recording minimalistic songs while high, writing pseudo-woke lyrics and listening to ‘super-dark-bands-you’ve-never-heard-of’ such as The Velvet Underground and Led Zeppelin. The result of Lorde’s transformation falls flat and feels boring, dull and even sleepy at times. It is all the more frustrating that muffled guitars instrumentals seem to be reused in virtually every song, giving the impression that the album only consists of one painfully long song.
Four years after ‘Melodrama’, which was cathartic and full of emotion, Lorde wants us to believe she has turned into some kind tree-hugging, meditating hippie prophet. The sound of bongos, cicadas, pipes and the Bollywoodian vibe are there to show that the New Zealand star has reconnected with Mother Nature and is now mature enough to give 'deep' advice about life and how to enjoy it best. Yet, 'wise' Lorde – which kinda sounds like a more hollow version of Lana del Rey and a happy Phoebe Bridgers – does not display any of the sharp cheeky lyrics, addictive beats and intelligent harmonies she got famous for in the first place.
When commenting her creative process for this record, Lorde said she wanted to make a 'weed' record and, in my humble opinion, getting high might possibly be the only way to appreciate this album. But despite all the criticism, there is still a light of hope. First of all, some songs do stand out (the more upbeat 'Solar Power' and 'Mood Ring' as well as 'Big Star' and 'Oceanic Feeling') and when listening to them, I realized what Lorde had in mind when making the record and how amazing of a summer album it could have been with a little more creativity and variation.
Second of all, after making a masterpiece like Melodrama, we can forgive her for this kind of disappointment. Though I must say it saddens me to have to wait another four years to see her release another project.

I'm no the biggest Lorde fan, but I like her music. Unfortunately, 'Solar Power' feels not that exciting and empowering. There's a couple of good tracks here, but the rest is filler, in my opinion. I think Jack Antonoff's involvement is to blame here. The way he tries to incorporate Lana Del Rey and others' vibe into Lorde's music is kind of disappointing.

It is important to choose a good album theme, but more importantly, to express the theme properly. Lorde's latest album didn't really show that important thing.

Except for 1-2 songs (Fallen Fruit, Mood Ring) , all songs are boring and similar and normal as if they were in the box.

That seems to have been the general consensus. Lorde's return came with a bright warning as SP bright lead single invited us to join her on her idyllic commune. It channeled George Michael's classic freedom 90 along with primal screams ''Loaded'', to no complaint (except from the public) the record sent a collective dread throughout the music sphere. With fans either hating it passionately or others claiming "its not that bad " . And from that moment things would stay the same: the noted similarities, the divisiveness then dejected appreciation. The record begins with a magnificent start luring you in with flutes and hyper specific lyrics in the vein of Lorde before exploding into a gratifying chorus in which she dispels celeb worship culture. An opener worthy of green or being a cathartic closer. "California " blows in with a psychedelic warmth and one of the best opening lyrics of 2021. Seemingly sparse emphasizing her raspy voice Lorde remunerates on the day that brought her to the "camera flash " with self awareness beyond her years descending into the blissful hopeful outro. Jumping years future "Stoned At The Nail Salon" begins vying for the best lyric of this decade in its opening line. In it like most of the album she reflects on her life post fame: the implications and consequences. Switching between memories of anonymity/privacy to the grace of domesticity she builds a content image . One which negates her touring life with her horded normalcy. One of my highlights about SP is the narrative coherence. The production so far has been swarmed with acoustic guitars, deceptive drums and airy production flourishes that aim to accentuate and not take center stage. Admittedly, Antanoff commercial demand has made the album less effective due to derivative moment's but he can forgiven in helping Lorde execute her vision. Album fan favorite "FF" comes with the closets to electronic production in SP will ever be. Addressing the climate change with adept imagery. From the failed previous generations wasted efforts to theirs. The songs second half is fu.kin brilliant! The 2k pop of Robyn assisted outro is catchy and breathtaking. Using the reversed cords of 'ribs' she addresses "PH" Ella before the experimental calm of the Robyn outro. The sonic sister "MR" goes full circle with a bubble gum pop sound narrated by satirical wellness celeb culture critiques. The emotional high points "MWAA"&"BS" channel liability&WITD as they address love and grief with the confessional dexterity attributed to Lorde. What I learned midway is this isn't a Lorde record it's an Ella record. She's flexing her lyrical prowess through 3rd person narratives (Dominoes &Helen Of Troy) along with her family, bliss and state of mind in the blockbuster bjorkian "Oceanic Feeling ",a career best. In summary SP is a stellar somewhat quite record that despite succumbing to surface level monotony manage to hold it's place in the year bests. Of course, each album is different in its own way ... or do you want the same girl doing the same thing over and over again? Why do we allow Gaga to reinvent herself? Or Taylor? Every time Ed reinvents himself, he goes from bad to worse and nobody says anything to him. Let the artists experiment! Leave Ella with her folkloric vibe and lack of percussion; she has done things for a reason, and it is time to enjoy them as they are. SP has not captivated me much, tbh, but I try, and it's true.

First, the opening track "The Path." Lorde opens the album in a way that easily beats all the singles. Second, "Secrets From A Girl (Who's Seen It All)," that song is amazing, it's the chords of "Ribs" reversed as she sings to herself from her first era. The song features a beautiful spoken part featuring Robin Carlsson. Now, the low points; in my opinion, "Solar Power" was the only serious low point, and nevertheless, I think it fits well in the context of the album, just not as a single and it still sounds straight from a Claritin commercial, but you know an album is great when its lowest point is still a 7/10. Overall, this album is significantly better than I was expecting and I do feel this album was worth the 4-year wait despite how the critics may feel. *EDIT: Coming back 3-months post release, this has just been an overall disappointment. Solar Power is a collection of subdued songs, which are quite similar to each other with only few elements tearing them apart. Just like Taylor Swift's folk albums, songs from Solar Power can be an okay background music with only few standout tracks. Plus, according to the way Lorde described this new album, I was expecting lyrics more impressive, more powerful. I was expecting to feel something, but I barely did.
Next, the productions. This is high quality fore sure, but kind of repetitive. That guitar, I understand Lorde wanted a sound more chill, more soft, more simple on this album but all the songs sound the same. I can't find the originality and uniqueness of her previous albums. I wish there was at least one song more rythmic, more dancing, in the middle of the album just to " wake up " the listener. Indeed, Solar Power tends to fall into a soporific effect at some point.
At the end, the main issue is that it's quite difficult to pick a standout track, a " coup de coeur " from Solar Power, because there is not. The songs are mainly unremarkable. The Path, Fallen Fruit and Mood Ring are the only songs that stands out a bit. I'm not going to say the album is boring because it would be rude, but it's definitely too " slow " for me. It's a relaxing album but that's it.
I'm quite disappointed that Lorde released Solar Power at the end of August, when vacations come to an end and the beach and the sun are far away behind us. It's a summer album, I'm not seeing myself listening to Solar Power in October for example. It would have been better to release it in late June.
I'm proud of Lorde for testing a new musical style and reinventing herself ! But it is just not for me. I mean, it would have be great as an EP, but as an whole album after 4 years of waiting, it's a bit weak.

All these connections Lorde is trying to make: her strange pastiche imagination of the ’70s, that random spoken word interlude by Robyn about climate change, and the themes of “sun healing,” never fully reach each other. Often, they come off as disingenuous and out of touch more than they read as brilliant, or comical. Whether the album is one big prank, or just one majorly failed experiment, the gist of having the “privilege to ignore” is lost in translation. All you are left with is just a handful of pretty alright songs.
