The Weeknd is a self-described pop star, and proves his worth on Starboy, an album with plenty to love.

Starboy won’t immortalize his legacy just yet but it will strengthen a once desolate Toronto kid’s placement in a musical sect he probably couldn’t even have ever dreamed of being in.

It may showcase a cleaner sound, both in lyrical content and production, but its value for money at eighteen tracks comes at the cost of coherence.

As Tesfaye notes on “Reminder”, The Weeknd has inspired a lot of imitators. Instead of moving forward on Starboy, he ends up sounding like one of them.

His guests include Lana Del Rey, whose affectless manner makes her a perfect match for him; though the best grooves here come courtesy of Daft Punk, bookending the album with the scudding title-track and Michael Jackson homage “I Feel It Coming”.

He remains an exceptionally talented vocalist, yet none of the many studio wizards represented in the album's by-committee structure is capable of wrenching him out of his usual morose rhythms. To be fair, none of them really try, playing to his basic talents while also coddling his laziest inclinations, swaddling songs in scintillating soundscapes that coat these sour centers in layers of sweetness.

It’s hard to overstate how aggravating it is to hear somebody who once stood as the dictionary definition of “less is more” fly so flagrantly in the face of the mantra that made him.

Starboy es un muy buen álbum con muy buenas canciones, que a pesar de no ser lo tradicional de the weeknd, sigue siendo un gran álbum.

The Weeknd's career from Trilogy to Starboy is like a creature crawling out from under the bed in the dark, to now laying in the bed with the lights on. With a new haircut. While singing. At first the singing was kind of creepy and alluring, but now its more open and inviting.
The Weeknd has talent! Amazing talent that makes it impossible for him to put out a truly bad album, especially since his core subject matter ( his voice, sex, love like themes, drugs, mistrust, money now, & more sex) are ever present.
The artist we see now is much more exploratory than when he debuted, "False Alarm" should be all the proof anyone needs. As he says in the title track, he "switch out his style & take any lane," very clearly refusing to limit himself. I applaud him for that, and since every song on the album debuted on the Billboard hot 100 at the same time I'd say its working. Now mind you, this album is a tribute to David Bowie & Prince, which Weeknd is no stranger to showing respect to those that came before him (D.D from Trilogy is still my favorite one to date). It was a very good tribute, people dont know that.
He himself is a little of the same, but his behavior communicated through the music used to carry a strong undertone of regret and confusion regarding his actions with women. "Twenty-Eight", anyone? Now, his music is a little confusing. I guess all his one night stands get him on " A Lonely Night" but he will also die for someone? Is that person Valerie? :D I'm just not sure. How'd we get from "Thursday" to here? He found this more sincere part of himself on BBTM with Earned It, and it was his first #1 single. So now, we mix that new exploratory Weeknd, with more fame & ego, and old Weeknd. Bam. Starboy.
Anyway, we core Weeknd fans just aren't sure what to do with this newly super confidant, resigned to his destruction Starboy. In the darkness, there was this hope that things could change and get better maybe. Now, he says its too late for him and we should give up. Never! He can bring back that deeper part of himself anytime he wants. Please, feel free to reflect everything whenever you want! A mixtape would be fine again, just like when he started. We'll be waiting

While his successor was hailed because each song stands out for its golden melodies, good instrumental and original lyrics, here in Starboy everything sounds very similar. A pop album like any other, is expected to produce 3 top 10 singles for the radios and will be a successful era, but it's definely in a well below level from his BBTM era. Expand
