The Weeknd is a self-described pop star, and proves his worth on Starboy, an album with plenty to love.

Starboy won’t immortalize his legacy just yet but it will strengthen a once desolate Toronto kid’s placement in a musical sect he probably couldn’t even have ever dreamed of being in.

It may showcase a cleaner sound, both in lyrical content and production, but its value for money at eighteen tracks comes at the cost of coherence.

As Tesfaye notes on “Reminder”, The Weeknd has inspired a lot of imitators. Instead of moving forward on Starboy, he ends up sounding like one of them.

His guests include Lana Del Rey, whose affectless manner makes her a perfect match for him; though the best grooves here come courtesy of Daft Punk, bookending the album with the scudding title-track and Michael Jackson homage “I Feel It Coming”.

He remains an exceptionally talented vocalist, yet none of the many studio wizards represented in the album's by-committee structure is capable of wrenching him out of his usual morose rhythms. To be fair, none of them really try, playing to his basic talents while also coddling his laziest inclinations, swaddling songs in scintillating soundscapes that coat these sour centers in layers of sweetness.

It’s hard to overstate how aggravating it is to hear somebody who once stood as the dictionary definition of “less is more” fly so flagrantly in the face of the mantra that made him.

Kendrick and Future prove to excel on 'Sidewalks' & 'All I Know' with great verses (especially Kendrick, really sounding like himself from 'To Pimp a Butterfly'). Tracks like 'Rockin' and 'A Lonely Night', produced by pop music royalty writers Max Martin, Savan Kotecha & Ali Payami who Abel had worked with before with his crossover smash hit 'Can't Feel My Face" and under rated 'In the Night' are undeniably hits in the making. As Abel said in his interview with Zane Lowe, his favourite track on the album right now is 'Secrets'. I can see what he means, the chorus is very catchy and the verses are seemingly pleasant to listen to, The album concludes with a moody, Michael Jackson- like song with the assistance of the Grammy Award winning French duo 'Daft Punk'. It's no BBTM or Kissland but is that a bad thing? The album is on the list with Lemonade, Anti and Joanne with artists trying to change what pop music is now. I don't believe it's his Thriller but definitely it is his Dangerous or Bad. (Michael Jackson) Expand

This time with more a more Michael Jackson and Prince esque bravado. This album has a solid number of entries, with the 80s dance vibe songs like, Rockin', Secrets, A Lonely Night and the Daft Punk produced "I Feel it Coming" rising to the top. The Weeknd also brought some great features, with Kendrick Lamar and Future all pulling their weight with excellent verses. Unfortunately, song like True Colors, Six Feet Under and Ordinary Life, are bogged down by a dull stereotypical RnB sound. This album has definitely pushed The Weeknd into new territory but, Im sitting here wondering if those plane RnB tracks should have been stripped, or replaced by more inventive and genre pushing songs. All in all, a good listen, he's done it again. Expand
