Jul 14, 2014On the Strange Weather EP, she takes this signature style and applies it to the songs of other artists who share the same particular penchant for music that finds inspiration in the dark recesses of our minds. This proves stunningly successful, no doubt responsible in part for the help Calvi recruited in the form of producer Thomas Bartlett (The National, Antony and the Johnsons) and one Mr David Byrne.
Jul 15, 2014Strange Weather is a brief look at an artist’s range and acts like a splash of cold water to pay attention to Calvi’s every note, as she continues to be one of the most slept-on musical marvels around. The strange fact that it might be a covers EP to do this undersells just how original these covers are.
Jul 23, 2014A must-grab EP for Calvi fans. Newcomers should first seek out her full-lengths.
Jul 14, 2014Calvi thrashes, broils, sweats, cries and lusts through the EP, and returns to reality remarkably unscathed from Strange Weather. Kudos to Calvi.
Jul 17, 2014These may not be essential additions to the Anna Calvi catalog, but they’re also much more than mere covers.
Jul 22, 2014None of these covers is quite as transformed as “Jezebel”, so nothing on Strange Weather delivers the same subversive charge. Partly that’s due to her choice in material, which for the most part is recent and more indie-oriented.
Jul 14, 2014It’s an odd selection, including Bowie’s “Lady Grinning Soul” as a pallid piano ballad, and Keren Ann’s “Strange Weather” as a desolate but oddly comforting duet with David Byrne.
